Nice cover. I liked the show. At least the first half. Blu would be better. They can do two releases. Any screens from the HD?

I think there’s some videos on YouTube of the new transfers.

Could you post some screenshots when you get your DVD?

I bought the Australian edition (Madman) a few years ago and I'm hesitant to buy this edition again but if the video quality is the same, I don't see the point.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Yeah, of course! Is there anything specific you’re interested in?

Hello,

A few images and your comments on the compression should be enough.

I'm attaching some images from the Madman DVDs. If you could find the same shots, it would be great to compare the Australian edition and this one!

The screenshots I'm giving you were taken in the first 5 minutes of episode 1.

Thanks for what you're going to do.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers (episode 1):
[Show spoiler]

New Adventures of Captain Planet (episode 1):

[Show spoiler]

These are 16:9, progressive. The color looks much deeper on these compared to the screenshots from the madman set. I've only watched a few episodes from each series, but overall I think the image looks great. I'm so happy these episodes are finally available on home media.

These look to be from the remasters instead of ports from 30+ yr old betacam tapes. It's a miracle most of the film elements from the DiC produced portions were kept and survived (since DiC scrapped film negs to most of their later edited on tape productions after the transferred the footage to tape).

I assume WA will put out a BD in the near future since the masters are ready go to.

Honestly, I'd be fairly surprised if that did happen. If it were going to get a Blu-ray, I'd have expected it to be handled by WHV alongside the DVD release, ala Super Friends.

Thank you for the images pleaserecycle, the difference compared to the Madman edition is obvious!

The only negative point for me is the 16:9 format, I don't really see the point of embedding black borders on an SD resolution but it remains in my opinion an essential purchase for all fans looking for the best quality on this series.

For the most part cropping anything that was 4X3 to widescreen is an irredeemable sin to me.

I agree. DVDs of 4:3 content should NEVER be formatted in 16:9 with the black pillar bars embedded in the image. I absolutely HATE when they do this, and it has become far too common these days.

This isn’t relevant to the discussion whatsoever and will just mislead people into thinking this release is cropped.

TMNT 87? Are you talking about the box set that is due out on October 15th?
If so, can you tell me if there is French audio on it? Because Amazon would say yes but other sites say there is only English dubbing.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

He most likely misspoke (or misunderstood the issue), and is referring to what the rest of us were talking about, where the image is 16:9, including black bars on the sides. Nothing is "cropped", but it would be better if it was just 4:3 formatted with no black bars embedded into the image, and instead just let the equipment add it. It actually makes for a better quality image. And in the off-chance that someone has an old CRT TV that maybe they use for retro gaming and watching old TV shows on DVD with, it would fit the screen properly.

While other comments have accurately described the issue, if you are going to reply to his comment here (or any inaccurate comments in the future), it is better to politely correct the error rather than reply in this manner. It isn't doing much to improve the situation.

Basically it's pillarboxed to look exactly like how 4:3 video on Blu-ray looks on HDTVs.

It's the same thing that people called out Viz for when they released the first set of their crappy Sailor Moon upscale in 2014 since those sets also came with the DVDs. It was also present in their remastered DVDs of Ranma ½ but because those discs were released separately from the Blu-ray sets, nobody really noticed until after Sailor Moon came out.

I've seen this on the Kino DVDs of the DePatie–Freleng subjects including the Pink Panthers. In fact, even the old Lionsgate Wallace and Gromit DVDs from 2009 were pillarboxed being ports from HD masters with the AR burnt in.
