If they made the book available separately I would definitely buy it, but I already own 75% of the movies in the set so it's a definite no-go, especially at even $400 during a half off sale.

They definitely dropped the ball on this one. Disappointing to say the least.

Criterion failed to recognize their base.

It’s really fine, this is no different from the abundance of coffee table books, musician box sets, etc etc that come out around the holidays. But yeah, for me, nothing to get excited about.

It’s like when they put out the Art House Essentials set or something. It’s gonna make some lil’ film fan so happy!

1. goddammit, I just got "ALL THAT JAZZ" last Week
2. whoever's spending $800 on it, instead of the $400 of the eventual Sale, is insane
3. this looks perfect for someone like me, who has very few Criterions and wants to get more into that (as much as I know so many factors, like some of these eventually getting the 4K Boot), but holy LORD, this would be the most expensive Import I'd ever do regardless of Pricing

Otherwise, I'm mixed on it - it's perfect for what I mentioned above, but frustrating for the Collectors. And I'm dreading the moment I'll find out all Discs come in Sleeves...oof...

Nice and easy bit of cheddar cheese for Criterion there - stick a load of already produced discs in a set and watch the die hard collectors trip over themselves to buy it. Clever.

I guess all the other boxes they've got planned are taking too long so someone was like "hey, I know! Eureka!"

Interesting 3 Women is included. Unless the license was set to perpetuity by Fox before Disney bought them out, I guess Disney is relenting on that one. 4k upgrade maybe?

Looks like Criterion sales are dwindling fast and they need a new method of getting rid off their overstock, unsold discs. Doesn't bode well for Criterion/physical media.

It seems the discs have new/uniformed disc art. Plus better ways to get rid of overstock than a extremely niche $700 boxset

Criterion appears to be one of the last labels to still have Fox titles under license in general. Signal One in the UK have a few left but Criterion probably made ridiculously lengthy renewal deals with the old Fox before the merger was completed. Maybe they got an idea of what would come through their former contacts at Fox.

If any label gets the foot into Disney’s door again it’s Criterion but I also wouldn’t rule out Arrow after surprisingly reading a Disney credit in their Conan the Barbarian booklet. IIRC Disney provided them with audio stems and an IP for the longer cut.

I'll say this much:

It's a beautifully designed box-set and it makes for a nice statement piece in the collection.

I already own 20 of the 40 but I'll sell off some of my standalones and get this box-set as everything else was on my wish-list.

Even if I just picked up the remaining 20 titles, that's $400 during the Criterion sales and this is $400 during the Criterion sales... why not? It's a beautiful set. I want the set as a display piece, to own a nice set celebrating 40 years of the Criterion Collection, the book, and the novelty of the Criterion Closet videos on disc adds a cherry on top.

Maybe not the most impressive set Criterion has released (that would be Ingmar Bergman's Cinema) and I still hope for more director-focused box-sets (and I'm expecting more to follow) but for a set overview of the Criterion Collection it's a beautiful package.

Certainly, it's a more well thought out box set and a better value than the Warner Bros Anniversary box-sets (with nothing but the original Blu-ray editions of films mostly available on 4K now) or the Disney anniversary set (much higher MSRP).

They also licensed All of Us Strangers from Disney as well recently.

Criterion definitely has more of a working relationship with them then say Kino. Where if I remember correctly the Insider said that they were unable to get a hold of anyone at Disney when they were trying to get their Fox licenses renewed.
