Nitroes and filmlover, thank you for bringing the VCI release of de la Cruz to my attention. Not sure I'll import the others from Japan.

Let's hope someone pics up Los olvidados and Las hurdes. Las hurdes is not available in HD, is it?

There's a French narated (with English subtitles) version of Las hurdes with a better than usual 480p image on YouTube;

There's also an English narated version where someone has found a nice 16mm scan:

I can't see that getting a release itself as it's so short.

I've dug out my old Criterion Simon of the Desert DVD and it has:

A Mexican Buñuel (1995), 50-minute documentary by Emilio Maillé
Interview with actress Silvia Pinal
A new essay by critic Michael Wood and a reprinted interview with Buñuel

The booklet is very well done.

Nice set. Now I can upgrade my Viridiana DVD. And have a better copy of The Exterminating Angel.

So I guess Radiance were giving restorations of Viridiana and Simon of the Desert and were able to do their own for The Exterminating Angel?

BTW, Orbit DVD has this set listed as region free. I don't know if that was made known.

Radiance have updated the extras with proper details and runtimes. Unfortunately it looks like the Kat Ellinger commentary track for Simon of the Desert may have been dropped, unless they just forgot to add it. It also doesn't mention a trailer now.

As soon as I see anything with her name on it my heart sinks, so this is good news for me.

Quick tip for improving your future: In practical terms, not watching an extra that is on a disc has the same effect as it not being on the disc.

Technically, true. But that also typically eliminates another commentator which would be better for some people. (BTW- I love her short video essays and her writings which I find are well thought out. I just can't stand her commentaries which seems like she just rambles on and on without anything prepared beforehand)

Thanks for the tip! I'll try to explain:
I stopped listening to her after she said Flesh for Frankenstein was "homoerotic". First of all it isn't, sure it might arguably verge on camp in some scenes, but there is zero sexual tension between Joe and his friend. How can a woman know what's homoerotic anyway? So yeah, there's that. Oh and her voice which is like fingernails on a blackboard. Callum Waddell had the same effect on me, he ruined many of the early Arrow releases with his oafishness.

You raise a great point! I'm gay and can't tell when anything is heterosexually erotic. Showgirls makes no sense to me when I watch it because I can't identify straight eroticism.

Glad someone else said it. Showgirls is so confusing. As a man, I couldn't tell that Nomi and Cristal wanted to **** each other.

Promise not to derail the thread any further but...Nomi and Cristal wanted to do it together??? See, that makes no sense! I just can't see it. Lesbian stuff makes no sense to me either as well as straight stuff. My gay brain can't wrap itself around any of it.

Yeah, Radiance's site confirms it's region free. I'll make note of that in the first post too.

I missed all the commentator shit stirring in this thread.

We need a new thread somewhere, someday, hopefully titled 'Commentators you love to hate... or hate to love!!'. The possibilities could be endless as everyone shitcans each other's personal favourites.

Not going to disparage Ellinger personally, but I do find myself agreeing with what Adrian Martin said here: https://www.adrianmartinfilmcritic.c...ays/audio.html
