Curious how this compares to the American version from about 20 years ago, to anyone who has seen both.

Saw this on Christmas (at a "sold out" screening). Truly excellent in every way. The 3-hours just flew by. Easily one of the best things I've seen all year.
4.5/5, but rounding up for the poll. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I love the Jim Caviezel/Guy Pearce film and to me it has always been top shelf in every respect. 10 out of 10. I will see the new film if it comes to Regal, but I've watched the Caviezel/Pearce film many times over the last 20 years. I own both the bluray and the digital and would buy it in 4K which I'm sure Disney will never release except digitally. |

Terrible. Felt like a tv mini series in a movie theater.

5/5
At close to 3 hours, this film is an epic. And it feels like one. It does not try to be too extravagant or experimental but does the basic so well that it shines as a package. The acting, cinematography, production design, locations, suitable score, editing, etc., combine to create an experience that lacks dull moments, which is notable for a film with a run-time of close to 3 hours. Another pro is that it feels like a modern 2024 film. While the story is old wine, the presentation is the new bottle. This is how a 2024 film should feel. As for cons, it does not follow the book too closely but the general idea is faithful to the book. |

Just to echo what others have posted here, this is truly a terrific adaptation of a literary classic, written and directed by the same team which wrote both of 2023's Three Musketeers films.
Much like those two films, the direction and related editing is precise with an ensemble cast led by Pierre Niney as Edmond Dantès that delivers perfectly attuned and complimentary characterizations which are always in service of the story. On the subject of the story, the writers strike a perfect balance of capturing the many themes introduced by Dumas in his exploration of human nature but yet everything seems new, never dated or predictable, especially given the many past adaptations. Beyond that, the technicals are wonderful, led by the cinematography of Nicolas Bolduc, also responsible for both TM films and Villeneuve's Enemy. The entire production, locations, costume design, score, is top notch and quite frankly, with a budget of $50M, leaves most Hollywood productions in the dust. The best compliment I can give this film is imagine if Ridley Scott was gifted an exemplary script written for the French language with a taut narrative (unlike Napoleon), shot in France and Malta with French actors, and it exceeded your best expectations. That's this film. The only negative is that I missed this theaters, and the subtitles for the presentation (Apple 4K) were of the SDH variety. Here's hoping the disc improves upon them. |

I was hoping for regular English subs for Monte Cristo, but the fact that they've already released it digitally with only SDH is troubling. If that turns out to be the case, I'll have to look abroad for a copy, as I did for the Musketeers. |

I saw the 2002 Count of Monte Cristo starring Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce in theaters and thought it was good, many years ago. Haven't seen any showtimes for this one, being an overseas movie.

Came to ask about this. Seems we can either get the NA 1080p blu-ray or import the German 4k for a fortune which is the only 4k I can find that has English subtitles.
