Just got my copy. Seems to be a pretty sizeable update available. Not seeing any patch notes anywhere.

I have the ps4 version and noticed the size of the update as well.

Does that mean the game is not on the cart? Unplayable w/o the update?

I actually didn’t check but it just seemed bigger than your average Switch day 1 updates. Usually they take a minute or two. This was easily over 5 minutes.

The PS4 version is almost 20GB which seems rather large.

The visuals confuse me. I was under the impression you could change between remastered and original graphics during gameplay. You can't. Also the post processing toggle seems to accomplish nothing. Started out remake graphics, toggling post processing and the image is extremely fuzzy. The original mode, despite being lower res actually looks sharper.

I was able to get the Nintendo Switch and PS4 versions. This is my favorite video game series of all time. There are some slight changes that I don't really care for but overall I'm happy with this release.

What’s happening with the price? It was $55 at release now less than 2 weeks later it’s $129 on Amazon.

If you look I don't think any of the sellers on Amazon are Amazon direct, all resellers. Just order from VGP or wait for Amazon to get more in.

I find it hilarious when a PS4 game installs like 10 GB of data and then downloads 20 GB of patch. And even more hilarious: at least my games are in fact playable without the patch.

And Shadow of the Tomb Raider even went full stupid and the game is actually fully on disc and relatively small. And then there is a 25 GB patch that contains the PS5 4k version, that is completely useless on a regular PS4. But it downloads anyway, and when you delete it, it keeps starting the download.

I just started playing this collection. The FX thing only seems to be the screen blur on the top and bottom of the screen, so I turned that off. There’s loads of shimmering on horizontal movement. That’s something they should have taken into account since there are easy fixes for it by this point. Backgrounds on battle screens seem wildly inconsistent; pixelated texture on large swathes but then there seem to be mismatches on how each piece of the screen is put together and any pixelated texture is suddenly smooth and flat (the forest with the hag’s hut is the freshest example in my mind, particularly the tree in the middle of the screen.) There are also occasional mismatches in regular map textures, like a door frame connecting to the wall that looks off.

I haven’t looked much at the “original” mode, the VCD quality cut scenes drove me back pretty fast (whatever I may think of AI tools, I think they did a respectable job fixing it up for the remaster presentation.)

Enjoying it quite a bit, though. Still, I wish we got the Sega CD versions as well.

Yeah that shimmering was pretty bad in the first game (haven’t started EB yet). I can fix that easily by toggling interpolation on my MiSTer setup. I’ve never seen it so bad in a retro port let alone a “remake.”

Had a feeling the way they were releasing this game was going make it a fiasco to buy, and sure enough, it is. Glad I went ahead and just ordered it from VGP Canada, even if it's backordered for several weeks.

Had a long marathon today to finish the first Lunar.

That hit the spot! I liked the Sega CD version but I thought Lunar 2 was considerably better. Complete has bumped the first Lunar up a notch in my estimation. It has the virtue of simplicity but it never feels like it’s just going through the motions. It doesn’t get cute hiding important stuff behind completely inane things. It doesn’t add half baked complications to its fundamental gameplay that ultimately add up to little but cumbersome obstacles for you to deal with. In other words, it’s not Breath of Fire (hallelujah!) Lunar is as charming as its follow up.

I missed a few of the cheesecake pictures. Those required borderline obsessive rechecking of places and dialogues after any kind of progress to acquire. That’s a bit much and I’m a slower, thorough player compared to most. Got all of Mia’s though as well as the sisters. Yes, I shamelessly spent time chancing my way through the woods after the yokel town; I thought it was pretty funny how they changed that whole bit from the original!

Thank heavens they kept it essentially the same Lunar it’s always been (save those GBA and PSP versions - those don’t look like Lunar!). The new voice acting is perfectly fine. Whatever minor visual quirks there are, this is a very welcome rerelease. Looking forward to revisiting Lunar 2 in a week or so, I actually had the Complete version back in the day but never finished it (my interest in video games was waning at the time and I was moving on to other things but thankfully the games are always there waiting to be rediscovered!)

Playing Lunar 2 now. Just got Lemina. It’s nice to play RPGs where you feel like you’ve accomplished enough in 1-2 hours to be satisfied. If I was playing a modern game, that would have just been two hours of exploring a field area.

I can’t stand the placement of the AI function here. I keep forgetting to choose command first and I hit it on accident because that’s where your magic attacks are when you’re choosing manual commands. I don’t want the AI, I don’t use it, I don’t need it, I just want to immediately start doing my thing. Let me disable it altogether so stuff like this doesn’t happen or change it so it goes into something I can at least back out of. Extremely annoying.

Wrapped up the epilogue. It’s one of the things that makes this one so special. After you beat the great evil of the universe, you just travel and deal with some personal business. It’s one of the greats!

I found all of the cheesecake this time plus the beefcake (including Borgan’s) and pretty much did everything except collect all of the cutscenes (some of those are just too particular about where you need to be to get them.) I never used a Silver Light in this playthrough, nor any of the two higher level healing items. WD might have went too far sometimes but the Lunars probably needed some difficulty adjustment upwards.

Might Google Translate my way through the PC-88 version of the original Legend of Heroes next.

Is that on Switch via EGG Console?

Yup, they have the first two. Now that they’re adding PC-98 games as well I imagine the subsequent entries will make the cut in the near future.

I could play the Turbo version but I’ve had some problems with the sound cutting out and it seems like I might miss some information because of it.

Any advantage to playing this on a Switch 2 over an OLED other than the larger screen? Almost done with Suikoden II so I will probably play this for a while until FFT comes out, but I am trying to decide if I should just keep playing my OG Switch games on the OLED due to the much better battery life.

It's a shame Nintendo doesn't do the cloud saves across platforms like Microsoft, but I guess that should be expected.
