I have a mad theory. What if Back to the Future is ouroboros (an endless loop) and the first time the doc saw Marty was in 1955? I have two reasons for this theory;

1. When doc first performs the experiment he is standing right of a car that is moving at 88 mph. Why? Because he knows the experiment is going to work because he saw Marty 30 years earlier.

2. When doc is shot the first time there is no blood because he is already wearing the bullet proof vest.

This would also explain why a scientist would befriend a teen because the doc sought out Marty and made friends with him. It all works.

Eisenhower was President, and the hippie "counterculture" movement was about a decade away. Zemeckis also pointed out that the 1950s were when teenagers first became recognized as socially independent, and started contributing to the economy with material purchases and such. So it was very fitting for a kid from the '80s, where many adults saw their children as being wrongly influenced, suddenly finds himself in a time so foreign to him he doesn't know what to do. If anything, the first film is the ultimate "fish out of water story", and Marty has to adapt quickly so he can set history straight...but he only has one week to do it.

I read a great story on FanFiction.Net, where Marty's parents discover the truth about what happened. Its short, but funny and heartfelt. You can check it out for yourself right here...

At the point it was being made(or a few years before) I think you could argue there was a bit of a revival of the 50's/early 60's, high school rock and roll especially like...

Honestly though I think the very basic idea of Back to The Future could likely to used without being a remake, time travel films obviously existed before that and something like say Time After Time actually ends up using quite a few of the same plot points.

You could easily make a time travel film were a modern character ends up back in the the past as a fish out of water if you weren't trying to exploit attachment to BTTF.

Cool idea, but if Doc already had met Marty, read the letter etc. that would mean everyone else had met him too, and 1985 would be the same as it is at the end.

Marty's parents (and Biff) would have met "Calvin Klein", George would have gotten confidence and they would have already been like they are at the end of the movie. And it would have been the Lone Pine Mall the whole time.
