Question First Blu-Ray experience - sizing is off?

Pardon my inexperience. Just hooked up my new Blu-Ray (Panasonic) to my Sony LCD 52" XBR4. Watched Spiderman 3 and could not seem to get rid of the top and bottom borders. I can use the zoom feature on the LCD but in "takes away" from the 1080P resolution. On the Blu-Ray player, I have set 16:9. SHould movies such as this be seen full screen? What I am missing. Thanks in advance - Tony
