Yep, you get it. 4K hardware and Atmos-based audio seem to have been scams.

i have 75ish UHDs. Had been using a PS5 to play them, but recently sold it and wanted to get a stand alone player with dolby vision. didn't realize the market for new UHD players is basically dead and 2 'affordable' UHD players with DV are prone to freezing and disc reading issues.
might just stick to blu-rays until i find a UHD player at a thrift store or something.

I only very recently made the 4k hardware jump, got a years-old OLED from someone locally on facebook marketplace for $500. I was stunned how good everything I watch looks. I’m not in a hurry to upgrade my existing Blu-ray collection, but the UHDs I have really shine and I’m very happy. Granted I was jumping from a cheap 1080 Sceptre my ex-boyfriend left behind so I had more than one reason to make the jump, but it really is night and day to a degree I didn’t expect.

And for what it’s worth, I’ve not had any freezing issues with my region-free x700.

I just got the Sony UBP -X700 player along with Blade Runner, and it looks amazing, i've seen it a 100 times and i have the old 5 disc DVD set with the workprint and 3 other versions. This version with the 4k and HDR enabled looks amazing, the movie has never looked so good, the neon signs look amazing, the blimp looks amazing, very impressed so far.

I also ordered T2 and Akira UHD versions, i know apparently they ruined T2 with degraining it but am looking forward to watching it again.

I have been watching some Blu Rays with the upscaling feature turned on and i haven't had any issues so far with discs freezing.

I was thinking about getting a region-free version, but then i found out most 4K Blu Ray's aren't region locked so went with the cheaper standard player.

I tried a few old DVD's that are from different regions but most wouldn't play... some did though, oh well.

Yeah it’s not an issue with 4k discs (outside rare, usually anime exceptions) but I sought out a region free one anyway just to free up my option for Blu-ray.

Blu-ray is perfectly fine, when it's a well-mastered one, but the same goes for UHDs. BDs have the advantage of being more scratch resistant, whereas UHDs tend to be very sensitive and a pain in the a$$.
On a 50 inch non OLED TV, I see little to no need for UHDs.
They are bloody expensive indeed.
BDs are awesome.

Rewind back 40 years during the VHS days and take a look at the cost of a VHS tape. And now fast forward to now and tell me if you still think 4K discs are expensive…

T2 on 4KBD isn't going to look as good as Blade Runner. T2 is pretty heavily DNR'd and he changed the colors for that release. Blade Runner upgraded to 4K for me on Apple and I thought it looked really nice. But I think I've got some 5-disc Blu-ray set with all three cuts and the workprint version on BD. I want to say I bought it around 10 years ago when it came out.

My main issue with 4KBD is that they can't seem to make affordable players that work near 100% reliably, and I often see discs with three little scratches on them, fingerprints or covered in oil like it just got done with a massage. That and there is so little demand for them outside of A/V enthusiasts that there are very few options for players and no incentive for them to put out new ones.

I pretty much use my Xbox One S now after my LG UBK90 crapped out. I probably wouldn't have gotten into 4KBDs at all if my Xbox didn't support them, but now I am right around 20 of them. Plus I'm running out of room (I've got 7 Case Logic 336-disc binders for all my movies and most are 99% full).

My advice is check reviews and then wait until they go on sale if the prices turn you off like they did me.

UHD BD is my favorite thing. I don't expect prices to come down but the price of everything else will go up to meet it.

I'm sad the Sony X700 is popular because it's a problematic player for many users. Sony used to make the most reliable Blu Ray players. Panasonic seems to be the UHD BD player to get and also it's what I use.

I bought 5 movies on used UHD BD yesterday for $30 so basically the price of a single new release.

As others have said watch for deals because sales happen all the time. For example also yesterday I bought this 5 movie new UHD BD set for $35. Which is $7 each

Finally .... investment seems to be a tragic word to use here. I have investments but my movie collection is something I do for "fun"

The lack of UHD player manufacturers is the big problem. Two dropped out and in my country at least LG seems to have dropped out so its only Sony and Panasonic.

I have been collecting films since VHS. Ultra HD is my favorite format, by far. It has quirks, but prices are pretty good these days considering the value included on most discs. I have gotten a fair share of my collection for $5.99-$11.99 most years during sale seasons. There is no reason you need to pay $30+ for any one movie unless you buy boutique stuff or need it day one. I also don't need to own everything on UHD, I buy plenty of $5 Blu rays still, if it was a good disc when it came out it's probably still a good disc. I also don't overlook DVDs. It's the best time to collect physical media because there are so many choices.

And at twice the cost of other DV players is not in the affordable category the one you were replying too was writing about.
The far more affordable 450 panny player with DV is not available in b&m stores, not available at all in Canada and probably not in a lot of other non-Europe countries.

I’ts obvious there are more affordable players than the 820, my point was Panasonics dont have skipping and freezing issues, then you quoted my post rambling like a Karen hehe go bug fast food workers that your food is cold.
