Hats off to Astro Bot. Team Asobi created an absolute masterpiece of a platformer, which feels both new/refreshing, but also a homage to many games past, as well as something like a spiritual successor to the Mario Galaxy games in some respects. In an age where the industry is dominated by colossal budget AAA games taking 5+ years to create, Astro Bot feels like a AAA game, but apparently took barely 3 years to make with 60 staff, apparently costing <$50 million to make. This definitely feels like a game other developers should use as a case study. You don't NEED to spend several hundred million and the better part of a decade to make a truly great AAA game. While Astro Bot is never going to do what Super Mario did for Nintendo, Sony is sitting on a gold mine with this franchise if they play their cards right. But then again, I thought something similar with LittleBigPlanet at one time, and Sony wasn't able to capitalize on that, as they could have.

Random thoughts on what I personally look forward more to than the awards presentations - the game annoucements.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet - Ok, so Naughty Dog has been one of my absolute favorite developers going back to the 2000's. I can't think of a single game of theirs I didn't at least like, loving nearly everything they make. That being said, my initial impressions of this are like most people who saw the trailer... not good. This just doesn't feel like a Naughty Dog game, in a bad way, and it seems like most people who saw the trailer agree. But I will withhold judging it too harshly. This is only an early trailer with very little gameplay, so hopefully my first impressions prove wrong. The Witcher 4 - Amazing series and the initial trailer looked amazing. Borderlands 4 - Not sure on this one. The trailer looked ok, but as some people have mentioned on varios forums, a lot of the characters look very generic and uninspired. I really liked the prior Borderlands games, but the initial trailer doesn't leave me as optimistic about this one. Okami Sequel - Hell YES! One of the most underrated games out there is finally getting a new entry with the original director. Hope this one is as good as the original, and also hope it's more commercially successful. Split Fiction - New co-op game from the makers of It Takes Two. This looks like a lot of fun. Looking forward to it. New Fumito Ueda Game - The next game from the creator of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Certainly has that unique look/style of his previous games. Definitely excited for this one as I enjoyed his previous games. Project Century - New IP from the people behind the Like a Dragon series. Set in early 20th century Japan and looks very promising. Virtua Fighter reboot - Nice to see this franchise getting a new entry. I am very happy to see Sega rebooting so many of their famous franchises. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound - Finally getting a new 2D Ninja Gaiden. Not my favorite franchise, but it looks solid. Onimusha: Way of the Sword - Another reboot of a well liked action game. Looks promising. The Outer World 2 - First game was solid, looking forward to this one. Turok: Origins - New entry into a classic FPS franchise. Good to see Turok getting a new entry. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - Sonic Racing was one of my favorite racing games from thr past several years. Nice to see a follow-up. Shadow Labyrinth - Wow, wasn't expecting this direction for Pac-Man. |

Overall, I found the show underwhelming as always, but the Okami announcement saved the whole thing for me. Looking forward to that one, though it may take a while until it's ready for release. But hey, lots of other stuff to play in the meantime.
I'm also interested in Fumito Ueda's new game, I've enjoyed his past work. |

Those numbers are flat out insane. The Game Awards seems like a runaway freight train.

The Last of Us Part 2 still holds the record for most awards won at The Game Awards, with 7 wins, including GOTY. Seems a safe bet The Last of Us Part 1 (received just as well as Part 2), would have likewise performed just as well, winning GOTY.

Def an underwhelming year. Only a few trailer debuts sold me. And the stuff awarded seemed obvious.
