after seeing this in a very sparse movie theatre and liking it, having seen several actual rubbish movies earlier last year in theatres that rate more highly, I decided I was finally not paying attention to reviews anymore.. in fact if a movie reviews badly i might be more inclined to watch it now. more recently Joker 2 reinforced this to me

I was watching Moana 2 when I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity!

Just like Inside Out 2, there's only going to be a limited steelbook edition:

Goes well with the original's steelbook:

Gather your family to experience Moana and Maui’s latest adventure at home when Disney’s Moana 2 arrives to digital retailers (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home) today and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on March 18. The highly anticipated sequel to the Walt Disney Animation Studios fan favorite is the #3 highest-grossing film of 2024 and recently crossed a billion dollars at the global box office. It is the fourth WDAS film ever to do so (Frozen, Zootopia, Frozen 2).

Critics and fans alike have hailed Disney’s Moana 2 as “a fantastic voyage” (Brian Truitt, USA Today), and “a joyous adventure the whole family will love” (BJ Colangelo, Slash Film). The digital and Blu-ray release goes far beyond with hours of exclusive bonus content for the whole family featuring a full-length Sing-Along version of the film, deleted scenes, featurettes and much more. The 4K UHD will be available in a collectible limited edition SteelBook® with custom artwork and packaging.

Film Synopsis

Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, Moana 2 features music by Grammy® winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

Bonus Features*

Full Length Sing-Along – Sing along with your favorite songs while watching the movie with on-screen lyrics.

Call of the Wayfinder – Celebrate Pacific wayfinding with the Moana 2 filmmakers as they meet real-life navigators from the Polynesian Voyaging Society. Hear from Nainoa Thompson, CEO of PVS, and other crew members as they discuss the cultural renaissance of wayfinding.

A New Voyage – Join the filmmakers and artistic leads for a deep dive as they reveal the development of this sequel and discuss the impact that the first film had across the globe. Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson talk about what it means to them to return.

Songs of the Sea – Sit down with songwriters Abigail Barlow & Emily Bear, Pacific Islands music legend Opetaia Foa‘i, and composer Mark Mancina as they discuss making the music. Get to know this talented team as they share insight into writing each brand-new song.

Kakamora Chronicles – Ever wanted to know more about the Kakamora? Gather ’round while Moni, everyone’s favorite Motunui historian, tells the tales from real Solomon Island folklore surrounding the mysterious and unforgettable beings known as the Kakamora.

Fun in the Booth – Step inside the recording booth with the brilliant and talented actors of Moana 2 for some creative fun as they bring their characters to life.

As much as people are free to spend their money how they wish, I have no issue with that in the least.
The reviews on Youtube back what they are saying with example footage and reasons

Looks like Sony's/Disney's obsession with 4K Steelbook only releases continue....

I also dislike the fact that they only advertised the Blu-ray version and not the 4K UHD version. What is their issue??

Judging by the reviews, I was expecting a disaster. But while it’s not as good as the first one, it’s still a pretty fun sequel. My kids (2 and 5) loved it so I guess they must have done something right? It’s nowhere near as bad as some people claim. I’d give it like a 7/10 while the first one was a 9.

Good sequel. The first was a tad long winded and I could tell they tried to remedy that a bit in this one, although I think they went a bit too far the other way and it could have used 2-3 more minutes to give the characters a good epilogue.

Definitely picking this one up though.

Sure. But then no. Willow has Dolby Vision so this should have it too.

And since it is a limited edition like Inside Out 2, it’ll sell out nearly everywhere in two weeks. Thus justifying and locking that high price forever-ever.

Studios are leaning way too heavily into the 4K only as a steelbook trend. It's not just Disney, which at least used to have standard as an exclusive before they let Sony make things worse. Lionsgate, Sony, Shout, some WB and some Paramount. I think Universal is the only one not doing it, so far.

You want to appeal to collectors, great, so make the steelbooks exclusive like before and do a standard version to be sold everywhere. Don't force it on everybody and call it "collectible" as an excuse to charge much more for the metal, once it becomes the only option it's not collectible anymore. I would even be fine with having a standard exclusive like DMC was doing. If the UK versions had a digital copy and I could redeem it in the US, I'd just get those instead of supporting this crappy Sony partnership. Plus the steelbooks have been crap, they keep using the same artwork they'd use if they had been exclusives. I'd rather just have normal artwork.

I blame Best Buy for abandoning us.

Disney loves them some high demand hilariously overpriced "collectible" merchandise of their IPs.

I'm beginning to think they see these $70 steelbook only releases as an accomplishment, not a problem.

Sigh. I don't like steelbooks so I guess I'll be buying the BD then, just like Wish and Inside Out 2. I miss the Disney Movie Club!!

I'm betting they've reasoned there aren't enough average joes who'd buy the standard 4K over the Blu-ray to justify the cost. The scalpers will ensure the steelbooks sell out at full retail price. The mainstream consumer will buy the Blu-ray or stream. The ad is meant for the mainstream consumer.
