Yeah, I’m kinda bummed the “un-Friedkin’d” version won’t be getting an upgraded Blu as well. Say what you will about Scream Factory, but they usually include the newest remaster on the included Blu of their UHDs (yes, to make money from Blu only people, but it’s still nice, especially when the earlier release has issues that need to be corrected).

I don’t see the need for a new Alice, Sweet Alice Blu-ray as the last one uses the same underlying 4K scan as the forthcoming UHD disc, which will merely give the viewer double the resolution and HDR. The Blu-ray release from Arrow a few years ago is as perfect a Blu-ray as this film could possibly get.

This movie did the gay community absolutely no favors. Even Al Pacino sees it for what it truly is: exploitative. It's an extremely unfaithful adaptation of the 1970 novel written by Gerald Walker.
I will never understand the appeal of this film. |

I'm not saying I put CRUISING in that class, but the fact that there's something kind of objectionable about it is a big part of its staying power, of what keeps it interesting. As for the novel: Yeah, Friedkin was always pretty candid that he didn't think much of it, and that he was far more inspired by Arthur Bell's articles about the Bag murders as well as anecdotes he got from friends in the NYPD. Aside from the high-level premise, was there really much about the book worth keeping? We're not talking about first rate literature here. Friedkin was about as faithful to it as Welles was to Badge of Evil, which is about right. |

I had a friend from New York City (who must have been quite young at the time, or was a lot older than I realised) that protested against the movie. I won’t dwell on why people might want to stop the movie being made. The making and release of this movie came at an interesting time, two years later Horizon on the BBC in the UK aired the ‘killer in the Village’ documentary about AIDS.
Cruising has a definite 70s vibe for me, unsurprising given it was released in February 1980 I think. It’s fascinating on so many levels. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqv9A9T7Y84 |

Speaking of the protests, I dug up an interesting perspective from Pauline Kael. She never dealt with a Friedkin movie in print after THE EXORCIST (she wasn't a fan of his), though when CRUISING came out she came to its quasi-defense, for example in this interview:
