Very different in tone from Herzog's film. It's probably a little closer to the Murnau film with some elements of Coppola's Dracula and maybe even a little of The Exorcist. It also does a lot of its own thing, it's not just a slavish remake.

I’ve only seen The Northman so how does Nosferatu compare to that? I liked The Northman.

I liked The Northman, but if I were ranking his films, I'd put it last. You should check out his other stuff, definitely Nosferatu.

I so rarely buy studio releases anymore, it's always a little bit of a shock to see so much ugly branding and text all over the back (and some on the front, too).

Still, I'll absolutely be picking this up at some point.

I thought Lily Rose Depp did a great job, but I do wonder if my expectations were so low as-is due to nepotism that she simply didn't disappoint me, lol.

I'm a fan of the Dracula novel and think it's a good twist on it and the previous Nosferatu movies. I am a fan of Robert Eggers' other films and actually when I watched The Witch, I recall thinking he'd be a good fit for a new Dracula adaptation. So I've always been in the bag for this. I think the movie gets the vibes right and it looks immaculate visually. I think the performances are good. Lily Rose Depp did a very good job (her casting was widely criticized) as well as other supporting players like Willem Dafoe, Simon McBurney (who has never given a performance like this onscreen) and Ralph Ineson. I think Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (in a divisive performance) are also quite good. Bill Skarsgard's performance as Orlok is great, but I don't love the look and I think some of the Ellen/Orlaok dynamic is a bit thorny. I can get why some might be a little bored with the Dracula story, but it's rarely been done onscreen faithfully and with some good money (last was the Coppola movie). This one is a little different with the Nosferatu stuff (the setting, time period, and changes to the story), but it's also close enough to satisfy that itch. Eggers has described this as Merchant-Ivory meets Hammer Horror, and I love both those things. My ideal Dracula film would be closer to the novel, and a bit warmer emotionally (this is a cold movie), and more colorful.

But above all, it's a movie I vibed with pretty well. I went to see it 4 times in theaters and probably would've returned if it'd stuck around longer in Dolby or IMAX and they hadn't announced the home video release 2-3 weeks after it premiered. It's a movie that I found easy to show up to, sit back, and get immersed and swept up in the world, the visuals and the soundscapes that it presented before me. Seems to be a more recent thing for me. Other movies I've enjoyed on this level are the two Villeneuve Dune films (which I've seen 12 and 8 times in theaters), The Batman (4 times in theaters), and 2001: A Space Odyssey (8 times in theaters) to some extent.

Amusingly each time I saw this in theaters, there were issues playing it at every theater (4 different theaters, across 2 states). First time (Dolby Cinema), they couldn't get the trailers to start and just played the movie but forgot to dim the blue lights so it looked rather dull and washed out. Second time in 35mm, they started the film and it was just the audio and a black screen for the entire prologue. Third time in IMAX, they played A Complete Unknown! Some people went to the lobby and they eventually started this film. Fourth time in Dolby, the movie stopped when they got to the gypsy camp. But they were able to start it again. Maybe I'm cursed?

That is the exact same text font they used in theaters as well. Glad they made sure to be accurate with that for the disc version.
