I watched this in the cinema last night. Stunning to.look at visually, and the music and period feel were superb. Bit of a slog to get through though, and Depp constantly looking like a miserable.pouty teenager started getting on my tits. Not one I'll be buying.

I'd have thought with the "restock" this might actually get a release date, but still listed as coming soon.

Great film. I already grabbed it in uhd. I only wished the whole time I was watching it that far more of it had been filmed at actual physical locations, as so many of the most memorable gothic films from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, which it is emulating to a degree. For my tastes, like almost all modern films built mainly on computer graphics, it lacked and needed more perspective footage showing broad, more encompassing views of the entirety of some of the castles, properties and locations involved. It suffered a bit for feeling very compartmentalized and studio-ized in this regard, much like a video game would proceed. It could've been a far grander, more epic cinematic spectacle with some majestic, creepy, realistic physical settings broadly and prominently on display on a larger scale, for the viewer to consume and absorb visually. I regularly felt that the framing was just too tight and the lighting too low, specifically to hide the blatant fact that we were looking at small areas of computer-generated imagery to avoid the real cost of actual dramatic location shoots, and it kept me from feeling truly immersed in it. Just an observation and a personal nit-pick. YMMV. On that basis alone, this film made me more disappointed that Dracula 1979 hasn't received a 4k uhd release, not that I'm comparing the content of the two films.

I think there are plenty of reasons to complain about how modern films are made using things like Green screen and the Volume rather than using locations or building sets. But picking out Nosferatu, or any Robert Eggers film, to make that argument baffles me.

Or he confused it with Herzog or wanted a Herzog type remake. Ah well another misguided soul. RIP. Best to always get a clue first. I love Herzog style but I knew this Nosferatu is in the Murnau style. I love that silent movie style Murnau did so well for his time. I need to watch more silents but he is probably up there among them. Died young like James Dean so we will never know what else there could have been. ![]() ![]() |

As an aside, I particularly don't care for Eggers' frequent choice of having characters stand directly in the center of the shot, full-length, and face the camera head-on (sometimes delivering dialog, almost like a soliloquy from a theatrical play), as if standing on a stage. The staged graphics and oddly positioned physical items/props around and behind the characters in these claustrophobic situations stand out tactlessly, and it pulls me directly out of the film. I noticed this in Northman and Nosferatu, but not in the VVitch or The Lighthouse. One glaring example in Nosferatu is where Thomas is standing in the center of the shot facing the camera, by himself, and the Count's creepy unmanned stagecoach has been cheesily positioned exactly 90 degrees across the path behind him, with the wheels straight-on, fully spanning the path. There's no possible way the carriage could or would have gotten wheeled into that physical position. Its placement is highly awkward, such that it looks entirely fake, placed just for a few seconds of the camera work. The shot also breaks up the continuity of the tension that is supposed to build from his impending and ultimate delivery to Orlok's castle. I don't mean to dissect the whole film, but, the "theatrical play" sensation is there regularly and unavoidably from some of these tight, poorly-staged shots, which doesn't add anything or work for me, and I find it very distracting. I prefer my movies not announce to me regularly that I'm watching a film. I'm not saying his staging style ruins the film, it just lessens its net result and knocks it down a few pegs for me, by lessening the atmosphere. i also don't recall this technique used in prior film iterations of Nosferatu.
