Well I will comment on these.
No broadcast is in 1080p, so these are probably merely 1080i. A single screenshot will not show this, it is in the motion that it can be seen.
I also find it hard to beleive that Lucas would release this as the quality is not as good as I'd hoped it would be. Here's why..
The original images are in 480, which make them look blurred, almost fuzzy and out of focus. It lacks the details and the depth the 1080 has. However the 1080 lacks the color it should have. The color in the face of Leah is washed out and almost gray, not flesh toned. This is apparent in all the images and needs major adjustment to look optimal as Lucas normally sets things. The original shots are blown out, meaning the 480 has darks that loose information (too dark) and highlights that lose information (too bright), cause from being over-contrasted. This technique is used to make a demo or a TV look more dynamic, but you often lose a LOT of information and things can literally disappear in the black or light. However the 1080 goes too far. The contrast is lost and there is not enough form as a result. Things start to look flat and shapeless. Getting the right balance of light, dark, and contrast is very important in a movie and of these images I see, both formats fail at this.
Banding is also an issue. If you look closely at the face of Obi-wan, there is distinct banding in the shadows near his nose. Again on Leah's face when she is in the Millennium Falcon, the shadows on her check have a similar banding effect. This could be a compression issue, or some similar artifact.
Finally, the grain looks almost like a digital effect to me. It has a distinct look that appears to be artificial, even possibly an artifact from up-converting. I will not go as far as to say these are up-converted as there is more detail in the 1080 versions than the 480, which leads me to believe these are HD in some form. However it is possible they are only 720, and up-converted to 1080, or they were given artificial grain to hide special effects or bring in lost detail in shadows. It is not very strong grain so it is also possible the grain was artificially reduced, which can result in a similar look like this.
Final thoughts, this is not the final HD transfer we will see on Blu-ray. Although it is a definite improvement over the SD release, it does not appear to be up to the standard quality of a Blu-ray disc. I expect Lucas will go over these movie with a fine comb to make sure everything is perfect when he is ready to release them to Blu (hopefully sooner rather than later).
Well that is my critique. Hope to see more SW related threads soon

exactly...I have IV, V and VI saved to my DVR in HD and they clearly look better than the pics that were posted for the reasons you mentioned above...

I don't understand why the pics look so washed out...but it gives off a very soft look...

It's all about the detail. Don't expect it to look as if the movie was made yesterday.

I have all LOTR in similar format. It looks a lot better than the DVD but not close to a Blu-ray. Plus they are mkv format which is not easy to stream to your tv with any media player.

you can burn them to a DVD9 and watch that way...

some up-conversion DVD players will play them and if you have a HD set....it will produce what you see on your computer...
