Might wait until a Criterion release that has both subtitle translations from the blu.

This is where I am with Ikiru. I have waited years for a 4K Blu-Ray of it, and hope that happens alongside High and Low sometime soon.

Outside of that, I just pre-ordered this last night. I cannot wait to get my copy of Yojimbo/Sanjuro next month!

It's for sure this release won't have both?

George Lucas owned the rights (Lucasfilm I think), therefore, Disney owns it now.

I’m sure it’ll just have BFI’s generic translation like with their other Kurosawa discs.

Can't say I'm a fan of the cover for this. Like, I get it, it's probably the most memorable scene in the movie, but it seems more appropriate for maybe interior art or in a supplemental booklet, but not as an image to represent the movie as a whole.

Toho only owns the Japan rights for this film. Similar case as Ran, which Kadokawa owns the Japan rights and the international rights are in the hands of Studio Canal.

Unlikely.
That's what's holding me from preordering. Criterion went the extra mile providing that double set of subs with the blu-ray, and I'd like to have them on the 4K too..

Finalized Extras for Throne of Blood. I should mention that BFI's 4K page currently lists it as being presented in High Definition, which I assume is a mistake where they're just copy/pasting the info from the Blu-ray page. I've replaced it with the UHD / DV info from the initial announcement.

Quote:
Extras
  • Restored 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)
  • Audio commentary by Japanese film expert Michael Jeck
  • Akira Kurosawa: It is Wonderful to Create – Throne of Blood (2002, 23 mins): this documentary about the making of
  • Throne of Blood features interviews with Akira Kurosawa, production designer Yoshiro Muraki, Noh performer Mitsuhiro Honda (from the Konparu School), and actress Isuzu Yamada
  • Macbeth (1909, 16 mins): transposed from the typical dreich Scottish landscape to medieval Italy, this Italian version has Russian titles, demonstrating how widely exported these films were in the 1900s
  • Macbeth (1945, 16 mins): two scenes from Shakespeare’s famous Scottish tragedy, with Wilfrid Lawson and Cathleen Nesbitt as a fine murderous duo
  • Original trailer
  • **FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Illustrated booklet with writing on the film by Alex Barrett, an essay on Kurosawa’s adaptations of Shakespeare by Ben Nicholson, Kurosawa on Throne of Blood (1964) and an original review

Just the Jeck commentary, trailer, and the "Akira Kurosawa: It is Wonderful to Create" are on the Criterion release. The rest are unique to BFI's release.

Looks like this will be a first-time order from Rarewaves for me as Amazon UK won't ship this one to mainland Europe (they did for the BFI Seven Samurai and Yojimbo/Sanjuro) and the BFI shop has been in maintenance mode forever.
