The goal for the company is to make two live-action films and one animated movie per year while also producing two live-action and two animated series for Max per year.

I think what you're referring to had more to do with the pandemic.

In any case, Gunn and Safran seem to have a clear goal, and so far it looks like they're sticking with it.

Gunn promised way too much, too big when he dropped that Chapter 1 video a few years ago.

Now he's got egg on his face as some shows and movies most certainly won't happen. If they're taking this long to get "right", I doubt they'll happen.

Sucks that Swamp Thing from James Mangold has lost some steam. I was hoping that would happen. I guess Clayface is stealing it's thunder.

He wouldn't be my first choice for Swampy. So many interesting options out there.

It didn't initially work for me. But after some time, I really warmed up to the idea of him.

I do wonder who you would like to see take it over?

Stephen Norrington
Johannes Roberts
John Hyams
Coralie Fargeat (if we can't have Cronenberg)

Which Cronenberg?

David is probably too old to handle a big-budget VFX-laden film like this.

God, I love those choices. Fargeat has pull now, so I wouldn't be surprised if she keeps doing original films but with budgets.

But Roberts and Hyams def deserve a big paycheck. Those Universal Soldier sequels are legit superb films. Better than most things outta Hollywood.

As for Roberts...that's my man. I want him to direct everything.

I would have loved a Guillermo Del Toro Swamp Thing that would be a great movie.

He'd also be a great choice for a new Constantine.

How very predictable.

It'd be nice if they just concentrated on making really good movies that don't necessarily halfway exist to advertise something in the future, for the time being..

The problem is that the DCEU (or whatever you want to call it) has such a spotty record. Does anyone TRUST this yet? I didn't when Marvel started the MCU because my first thought was "lol they're rebooting Hulk? Good luck with that haha". Well, look at it today. But also, look at the track record of Marvel films before then - F4 films were a complete disaster, as well as the Corman Captain America. Marvel had a lot to prove, and did it at a point when the only real Marvel franchise was X-Men (Fox).

So for DC to pull this off, they need a long-term goal, good scripts, and people that will stick with their roles. Right now, that hasn't happened. The only two important roles that were changed in the MCU were Banner and Roadie (and Red Skull...kinda). So do people have faith in this? Maybe. I don't, not yet. That doesn't mean I won't be watching closely, but this gets into Marvel/DC issues I've seen since grade school - IMO as I got older I found that Marvel had the better stories, and DC simply fell on the names on their characters until Dark Knight and Crisis. I read a lot of Superman back then and "oh, Lois has Superman's powers" was just silly. Same with World's Finest - I found the stories were just ho-hum after a while. So DC really has to knock it out of the park. I just don't know if they have the backing for it (not just money, but creative minds).

I think it’s highly unlikely there’ll ever be a cinematic universe like the MCU again (superhero or otherwise). It’s not unreasonable that Gunn and co would workshop crossover/team-up films in advance, but it’s probably something they should’ve kept internally instead of declaring to the public before they’ve released a single film.

I think they're trying to build excitement for what's coming (Superman, Supergirl, the Lanterns show, etc).

I kind of feel like DC keeps getting ahead of itself.

They should just focus on making good movies first. If they do that, and then make a good Justice League movie, that'd be great.

I don't think Gunn & Safran are planning to remake Justice League (though I could be wrong).

They are trying to convince everyone that they can both make good standalone movies, and also work towards the so-called "culmination film" that will (hopefully) rival Endgame.

Can they pull it off?

I would love to see them do it. But they also seem to be trying to convince everyone that they can do it, before they actually start writing the "culmination movie". Maybe they feel corporate pressure, I don't know.

But if anyone can pull it off, I think it would be them. Gunn is already familiar with how these things are planned...
