This isn't available on Target, so no B2G1. But it's a pretty solid price if you're buying at least $30 worth of stuff on Movies Unlimited. Only $13.58 with the 20% coupon MUMAR25.

I remember it was just like yesterday, but it has been six years. Six long years since the news broke that one of the best Japanese films in the last 20 years was getting a DVD only release. I remember thinking it had to be a mistake, but absurdly so, it was not a mistake. However, now again after six long years, Shoplifters finally has a Blu-ray release in the US, and it feels great to finally have this in my collection.
The film is about a group of people, or as they call themselves "family" who are surviving by the skins of their of teeth. People of unfortunate circumstances have banded together for their own selfish needs in most of the cases presented within journey we the audience are to embark on. Yet, the film portrays them not simple survivalists, but as complex and often times good hearted people. You know what they are doing is wrong, but you still hope for the best. I consider this to be Hirokazu Koreeda's masterpiece. He's done many great films like Still Walking, Nobody Knows, Like Father Like Son, and others, but this is a film that fully has all of his directional skills working full cylinder. His films will almost always make you feel uncomfortable or unsatisfied, but they always feel real. A slice of reality in cinematic form. The picture quality is excellent, however the optional subtitles are presented for the hard of hearing, so expect to see things like "leaves rustling" appear from time to time. You do get used to it within the first ten minutes. There are also no special features, but at the end of the day I'm here for the film, and that's what presented here in great form. A true piece of cinematic gold that I believe should be viewed by all serious cinema fans at least once. I still believe this is a much better film than Roma and should have won the Academy Award, but at the end, an awards means nothing compared to the feats a film can achieve when reaching ones deeper self. It sticks with you, as it has with me for so many years, and hopefully many others will be able to experience this film for the first time because of this release. ![]() |
