Lol, am I dreaming it or doesn't someone around here have a signature that says "Jai Courtney must be stopped!"?

Four and a half stars

I have seen several movies about killer sharks, and I have seen several movies about serial killers, but I have not seen many about serial killers who murder their victims by using killer sharks. Dangerous Animals, a 2025 survival horror feature directed by Sean Byrne, is the cinematic mashup that the world has always wanted, but never deserved. If, like me, you watched the brutally sadistic 2005 Australian Outback thriller, Wolf Creek, and thought to yourself that the story would have benefitted greatly from the inclusion of sharks, then you will likely consider this film to be a dream come true.

If asked whether she would prefer to encounter a man or a shark if she were alone in the ocean, then Zephyr, a toughened world-weary American surfer girl and loner played by Hassie Harrison, would probably choose the shark. Unfortunately for her, she will soon meet both, thanks to Tucker, an unkempt, but seemingly-charming boat captain, played by Jai Courtney, who has a bad habit of taking tourists on shark cage expeditions and then returning to shore without them.

This Australian-American co-production may not be a particularly unpredictable endeavor, but it nonetheless maintains a nail-bitingly suspenseful edge with its depiction of a scrappy and resourceful heroine who improvises creative ways to escape, only to have the rug pulled out from under her time and time again before she can reach salvation. Jai Courtney's antagonist, in turn, exudes just the right combination of meticulously calculating intellect and maniacal sociopathy. Imagine if Robert Shaw's Quint from the 1975 Steven Spielberg blockbuster, Jaws, wanted to feed us to the fishes instead of saving us from one.

Dangerous Animals pulls no punches with regard to its violence, so squeamish prospective viewers out there should consider themselves warned. For the rest of us, however, this rugged outing provides an excellently riveting slice of summer season entertainment. Hassie Harrison's Zephyr may only give one thumbs-up to this movie, but I myself award it an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

This only made $1,533,333 this weekend. Sad. I was hoping it could at least pull in 3+.

From Deadline:

Quote:
Dangerous Animals (IFC) 1,636 theaters, Fri $760K Sat $463K Sun $310K, 3-day $1.53M/Wk 1

Very fun Australian horror movie with a new spin on the shark genre which played in Director’s Fortnight at Cannes. It’s 85% with critics, and 71% with the Rotten Tomatoes audience score. B CinemaScore, which is high for a genre pic. But there’s a lot of R-rated stuff out there, and this one got buried at No. 11. Close to half the audience was 18-34. Best business was the East, West and South with LA’s AMC Grove the best grossing location with close to $10k.

That's unfortunate. I watched it last night with my wife, she's a big fan of serial killer movies, and I have a soft spot for shark films, and we both really enjoyed it. Honestly, this probably should have been released in August, after the wave of summer blockbusters. A lot of shark movies that came out in August have done quite well, The Meg films and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, for example. This one really deserved better. Hopefully, strong word of mouth will give it the boost it needs.

I enjoyed this but the film has one my pet peeves.
[Show spoiler]Twice Hassie Harrison overpowers Jai Courtney and rather than finishing him off she runs away so he can simply catch her again.

I agree with this. I hate that!

But I loved the movie. I found it absolutely terrifying. Hassie Harrison was great in her role—her portrayal of Zephyr made for a badass final girl. She reminded me a lot of Jennifer Lawrence, and at times, it felt like I was watching Jennifer Lawrence throughout most of the film. I hope to see her in more movies after this.

This was a great, visually stunning thriller! The cinematography was beautiful. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen.

There's quite a lot of those sort of issues in the movie.
[Show spoiler]Many occasions where Zephyr is bleeding in the water and the sharks just magically ignore her for example.

Still a very enjoyable movie. Jai Courtney was excellent. Never thought I'd ever say that.
