The UK release is far away the better of the two, not just for the actual extras included, but it also will have an exclusive HDR/DV grade produced by Second Sight. The US edition is sorely lacking in every area compared to the UK release.

Serious question: is an HDR grade actually a good thing when the film was released in 4K SDR? If the filmmaker wanted HDR wouldn't they have released it that way to begin with as the tech was available?

i'ma need a region free player
edit: neeeevermind. i assumed the features would only be on the region B bluray disc, but i see there's also a 4K-only edition that contains all the features. i don't need the rigid slipcase, book & art cards, etc Last edited by GaragePoet; 05-31-2025 at 04:51 AM. |

My question was, if the director preferred HDR why wasn't it released that way to begin with, given the tech was widely available? |

That was 100% literally not your question, and everyone can read that and plainly see for themselves. You have a pathology, sir.

I was looking to maybe buy this. As far as I can tell, the original master for this movie when it premiered in 2023 was 4K SDR. So to me, that makes me think the people that made it wanted this to be in 4K SDR for whatever reason, as HDR was widely available for years prior to 2023. It's hard sometimes to figure out what is added for marketing purposes to sell home video copies, and what is actually an improvement, as the "director approved" stamp is thrown around quite a bit, to the extent where we've had multiple releases that look totally different despite both being director approved. Was there any place that this debuted in 4K HDR in 2023 or even now? No, right? This is just a custom 2025 Second Sight grade? In that case, if the Shudder is 4K SDR I will probably go that route, as my hunch would be the director preferred it to be SDR if that is how it was originally released given how widespread HDR was in 2023. There is no way to know for sure of course, as the director would never shit on either release, but that would be my guess. |

Got the regular version in from Target the other day but got it for like $16 as part of the deal a couple months back. Now wondering if I should double dip with the Second Sight. Magic 8 ball probably points to yes.

The hdr cost money. Just like terrifier 3 4k, the USA release had no Dolby vision because they didn’t want to pay the license to use it so they released it 4k sdr. I’m sure someone can find the quote from the company stating that.
So I’m sure this is the same thing. Shudder didn’t want to pay for the license to use the hdr/dolby vision. |

I get Ruined's point though. I can't see any record of this film being in HDR anywhere. It's not like it had a Dolby Vision DCP or streaming version, that Shudder just didn't want to license for their disc. If the film itself was finished in SDR, then it does seem a bit like it's simply getting a new HDR grade because some people throw tantrums over lack of HDR on a 4K, as evidenced by some of the reddit posts in the above linked thread

I could've sworn this was listed as a steelbook when I originally preordered it. It got here today, along with The Creep Tapes blu-ray, from Atomic and it's definitely a standard case with a slip.
