The listing at Vinegar Syndrome makes it sound like you will have the option to watch in French with English subtitles. Is this just an error, or why else would the French dub be included? Did MGM just throw it in for free?

The artwork for the VS is so wrongheaded, Adam Maida is usually so on message but this has a Kentucky Fried Movie motif, which is bizarre.

And yes, the release strategy is strange.

This is selling out quickly on the VS site. Almost a quarter of them are already gone.
Mélusine, ironically, have provided the contextual healing.

Hugely unexpected and welcome! Grabbed the standard this time as much as I like that Melusine hard case.

Not a group, a movement ie. The will of the people.

There's been some hoary old retrospective bollocks written about Last Tango in Paris not least the actual rape & sodomisation of Schneider, which is completely false. It is a controversial issue of course and there are so many conflicting accounts, even from Maria Schneider herself who later stated that Brando acted like a Father towards her. Bertolucci fared less well in memory.

Like all great art it's hard to pin down, Pauline Kael (who you'd think would hate it, f***ing loved it), also, it would take a brave individual to castigate a screenplay with Agnès Varda's input as misogynist.

It has some flaws but haven't all masterpieces?

Vinegar Syndrome's release strategy continues to confuse, so forgive an old question - will this receive a standard edition eventually?

Standard edition's available right now -
https://vinegarsyndrome.com/products...42693863014442

Sometimes you just have to use the dropdown box under the title/price to select the edition you want.

Just pre-ordered the standard myself.

You can buy the standard edition already, you just have to select the "edition type" on the page. It's not that much cheaper, though, only a £6 saving.

EDIT: Damn it, Phil!

I hope the interviews or the booklet addresses the controversy. All films should include their historical context and I'm sure there's no shortage of people wanting to talk about this one.

I don't order from VS direct anymore, here in the States. VS sends their 4k discs out early to boutique retailers like OrbitDVD. I can pre-order from Orbit and have the disc in-hand about a full week sooner than if I had preorder directly from VS, every time. Weird, that. Plus, free shipping and no tax from Orbit over here with three or more items, so it also comes out much cheaper than buying direct. Winning!

Default Bertolucci In Paris

Agreed, and if so, address Ms. Schneider's life experience. Born out of wedlock, fathered by a French actor who never recognized his paternity until much later (post-Tango) and a mother who was unstable and abandoned her to relatives, she left home at age 15, was taken in by Bardot and later 'discovered' by Warren Beatty.

In retrospect, there's a very good argument that Schneider at age 19 was a poor choice due to her age and personal history, or on point, the consequences of such a role. Perhaps Bertolucci erred based on his perception of her background or was under pressure due to Trigtignant and Sanda dropping out.

On the other hand, would Schneider have won the role to co-star with Nicholson in Antonioni's The Passenger if she had not accepted Tango? Would her statements have remained the same if she had earned the same 3 million as Brando?

As far as the film, one wonders what would have been the response if Tango preceded The Godfather? Brando's career was in decline and Bertolucci was relatively unknown in the States. I do believe, based on my recollection, that many were eagerly anticipating Brando's next work, and were unprepared for the film.

As far as this VS or Melsuine dynamic, while I do prefer the original art, I wasn't about to create a new account for Melsuine and forgo the banked VS rewards to cover shipping.

Artwork aside, I'm just very pleased this film will receive the treatment and care VS is known for, and in future look forward to a weekend triple-bill with The Conformist and The Dreamers.

It's possible the extras could cover Schneider's life but unless it influences her casting in the film I'm not sure it's of relevance. It's unfortunate that her life has been defined by her role here, and not her acting but the controversy around the production. I hope there's an article or some portion of the one of the video extras that speaks about her.

I don't think you have to do this. I haven't yet placed an order, but I was surprised to find that my VS login credentials worked at Melusine and my VSMC points are available under "Media Club" tab at the Melusine site.

Is anyone else surprised the new VS artwork is outselling the original Melusine? Mostly due to confusion over points or combined shipping or preference for the new artwork?

That's strange. My VS credentials didn't work when I attempted yesterday, and when I attempted just now after reading your post, they still don't work for Mesuline.

It's makes perfects sense that they should, but I'm getting an incorrect login.

Thanks for reply all the same, and I'll take another look at it when I get back home.
