I can't figure it out either. I notice my posts will revert to the question marks if I quick-edit them (and thus I accidentally ruined last year's Hunger Games posts). They might do the same with the quick-reply. It might help to only use the Reply button and only edit with the "Go Advanced" button.

Same, a couple of times in the 2023 challenge I had to rebuild my whole list, they're just inconsistent. Maybe I'll just get rid of them altogether next year.

Earth II (1971)
Blu-Ray

Imagine a new country
that they call Earth II
no weapons to fight with
it isn't hard to do.

Imagine all the people
livin' life in spaaaaace

In his quaint made-for-TV thriller, a space station is granted the unique status of being its own sovereign country, which is self-sustaining more or less and weapons are prohibited. Stuff gets real though when a Chinese nuke is found floating around nearby, and China just gaslights everybody about it. So the astronauts of Earth II decide to carefully retrieve the bomb, but this only prompts the hard question about whether it should be disposed of, or kept as a means of defense.

Much like Spaceflight One, Earth II has a thrilling enough premise but these movies move at a snail's pace and don't show much personality. Earth II presents itself as a rather stiff and serious drama that tackles real issues like politics and humanity and stuff. What helps Earth II is that it appears creditable, framing the events as hard sci-fi with less focus on fantastic technology and more on the situational tension. It might look like A Space Odyssey at first glance, but it's really more like watching the Cuban Missile Crisis happening in space. Pretty cool concept, especially coming from this era, just a few years after the historic moon landings but still knee-deep in the Cold War.

There is good merit to the story's approach, which aims for a "give peace a chance" message by way of civil discourse. Funnily enough, the final solution happens when a certain character
[Show spoiler]brashly ejects the nuke into space, expecting it to head to the sun
, which kinda goes against the democratic nature of the setting. Debates often boil down to one viewpoint or another in most movies, which keeps things black-and-white, and Earth II probably intends to do the same. But whether it realizes it or not, the character's decision does check off half of the five possible viewpoints behind ethical decision making--yes, getting rid of the thing would support the greater good, would reflect greater virtue, and it might support moral rights I guess. But this decision might seem like a bleeding-heart liberal move precisely because it rejects the last viewpoint: the real-world pragmatism. The film puts its biggest focus on whether a place like Earth II should carry "a big stick," and realistically, I'd argue that it'd be dumb not to. Even the film's opening scene kinda shoots the pacificist view down as it shows a boat patrol gunning down a sniper trying to take shots at the rocket launch. It's a scene that is referred to again, suggesting that this guy was working for the CCP, but in its own way the scene also shows that a good defense is necessary. But it also contradicts the film's point about unity and peace.

The plot sustains itself on the situational tension, which is interesting at times, but it quickly abandons any political tension that the scenario suggests. There is one good scene towards the beginning when politicians confront the Chinese (it is great to see a young James Hong here), but the film could have easily ratcheted up the tension if the CCP came back to pressure everybody. As it is though, they remain silent throughout the picture while Earth II acquires their nuke, and it's a missed opportunity since there are no repercussions suffered. And this might be the film's greatest weakness: despite the visceral thrills of watching astronauts trying to move this thing in space with various obstacles and restraints, the plotline has no real conflict to speak of. It doesn't help that the characters have no arcs or depth. The first 12 minutes is a bit of a chore as it just shows a room full of guys watching a big screen, and the next scenes are just slices of life that show off space station living. The only thing keeping these scenes engaging is the novelty of the subject and effects.

Thankfully, the effects are pretty solid for this era, and probably looked amazing on a 70s CRT TV. The space station is decidedly lacking in detail, but other models look creditable and good. I even like how the shuttle has these arms that come out and carry the nuke around like a football--it's adorable. Space station scenes have a clean and slick look highly reminiscent of A Space Odyssey, but maybe a grade cheaper. Photography in general is solid and interesting enough to look at. The film looks good enough to overcome the dry nature of the story and characters. Chances are that, like it is with Asimov, character isn't the point as it is the ideas. And Earth II could represent a noble utopian goal, and the film simply shows how age-old problems of war and division could remain a threat. Granted, Star Trek probably does the same over and over again, but I couldn't help but to compare this film with ISS from a couple of years ago. ISS also presented a visceral scenario that space station inhabitants had to deal with--sadly, I found ISS vastly uncreditable precisely because it betrayed the core value behind space exploration: the value of unity. I couldn't buy that all these astronauts would suddenly go at each other's throats because of conflicting text messages. Thankfully, Earth II stuck with its guns and showed professionalism and unity among astronauts as NASA and God intended.

Default Have you heard the tragedy of Darth Vader the simp?

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
UHD

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, the war between the galactic Republic and Separatists comes to a head. The Republic hunts General Grievous while Anakin Skywalker foresees a tragic fate for his secret wife while his loyalty remains stuck between the Jedi and Chancellor Palpatine. Choices are inevitably made that sets events into motion that will tip the balance of power towards the Dark Side.

I had written plenty about this episode on my blog six years ago (six years already, wtf?). It might have been a little long in the tooth, but I think most of these thoughts still stand. The film carries over some of the weaknesses of the prequel series (wooden acting, pacing problems), but the battle scenes and lightsaber duels are still some of the best of the series. Everything in the prequels led up to this–a gut-wrenching tragedy of a fallen hero who tried too hard to hold on to too much and succumbed to the Dark Side. Also a gut-wrenching tragedy of how liberty dies with thunderous applause–all manipulations from a conniving Sith lord to claim power and bring down the Jedi Order. The story comes together rather impressively. The film was a satisfying conclusion 20 years ago when I saw it on the big screen, and it's still my favorite of the prequels.

Al_The_Strange, I see you have given this the fantasy icon, I have been trying within myself to figure out which way I would use the icons for the Star War series and from what I’ve researched so far the consensus is they are Sci-Fi, but I think you can use them either way, just MHO!

Yeah, I was counting Star Wars as a "space fantasy." The Force being a magic system is the biggest thing that pegs the series as fantasy. I would have probably argued it as sci-fi in the past because it follows the "space opera" tropes as well, but the more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that fantasy was the more correct genre.

I could change it to the alien heads if y'all aren't too picky about it. Was tempted to maybe watch more fantasy this month, not sure yet though.

The Beast (2023)
La Bête
Blu-Ray

In the near-future, a woman interfaces with an AI with the goal of obliterating all her emotions, as will be the custom of the times. But when she has feelings for a dude, she unlocks some core memories from past lives.

A recent Criterion Channel darling, The Beast takes after a 1903 novella entitled The Beast in the Jungle, and the real point of this is supposed to be the characters confronting an unseen "beast," which I guess is supposed to be like the shadow self or something. As it is, the film brings up this beast only in a few tense scenes, but it seems more interested in its triptych narrative that bridges the past and the present--or rather, the modern and post-modern. The costume drama of the past didn't really thrill me much, but when the film shifted to the approximate present, I started to see a point, in large part because the film is not so much speculative as sci-fi as it is reflective of the modern social scene. It's easy to romanticize the past, a simpler time when men were gentlemen, women were ladies, and the two could be united in a mutually romantic relationship. This contrasts heavily with the modern scenes, where the guy comes across as a redpilled incel a-hole and the woman is a reclusive flake. These characteristics sorta made me hate the characters, but maybe that's the point--to show how modern society and technology made us distanced, lonely, and loathsome. And we might be heading towards a future where emotion overall becomes a thing to be erased. However, with the way things play out in the film, you could walk away with the message that the best solution for the ladies might be to just turn lesbian.

As an experience, the film sorta kept my interest in bursts. It certainly looks great, boasting superb cinematography, nice costumes, and a lot of interesting editing quirks. I like Léa Seydoux and her performance is good here. The film can come across as a stuffy arthouse picture, but it's more interesting than I expected.

This is also the first film I've seen that had a QR code come up at the end. When I scanned it, it played the credits on my phone. I was floored. Is this a radical new way to format films–to put the credits somewhere else and let the film stand on its own? I'm curious if this will catch on with other films or in the mainstream. It does seem like the time is ripe for this kind of change, and I find it fascinating.

Ghosts of Mars (2001)
UHD

A police lieutenant on Mars stands before a tribunal and recounts the harrowing account of how her team confronted a group of colonists who were possessed by Martian ghosts.

This is a critical re-evaluation. I had seen this film a couple of times before and it just always fell flat for me. It does have some things going against it, especially for a 2001 film–it looks cheap as heck, characters are flat, action isn't particularly flashy, CGI looks bad, and it doesn't really stand out that well. As it is, it seems like there are oodles of movies about soldiers or guards in space who come across some scary thing and have to shoot it dead. Aliens might be the earliest (and still best) example, but this film would be quickly overshadowed by Resident Evil, and both these films have a monster fight on a train. RE certainly looked better and had more style.

But the low-fi nature of the film is likely a purposeful part of the experience, just as it was with the Escape From New York / LA films. John Carpenter really aimed for a vibe with his sci-fi films, putting more effort into the pulpy nature of the narratives and less focus on budget or showmanship. The story for Ghosts of Mars might be a little weird to reconcile since it's framed as one big flashback, but this flashback has flashbacks within flashbacks and even jumps around in different character POVs (how can this character know what all these characters and even the "ghosts" were doing if she couldn't see them for herself?). However, there is something satisfying about how the opening and closing scenes connect, and the final cliffhanger-style ending is pretty neat. At the film's center is its schlocky premise that some weird alien mist will possess people, but I like the idea that this is Mars fighting back against human invaders, inverting the traditional "Martian invaders" theme. Can't say it's wholly original though–in its own way, Ray Bradbury kinda covered this concept already in one of his Martian Chronicles, in which one guy was possessed by a mask and went nuts. Now we have a gang of guys, and there is one distinctive "big bad" that stands out as the leader of the ghosts. I have to say though, I hated his voice. It was not convincingly scary, it actually sounded kinda lame and goofy.

The cast for this schlock is stacked: Ice Cube dominates the credits, but Natasha Henstridge is the lead and I enjoyed watching her character. Jason Statham, in a time when he had more hair, is always a cool dude. A mature Pam Grier adds much gravitas to the team, and I like Clea DuVall too. They all come together in the story as a ragtag mix of cops and prisoners who have to fight their way out, and that alone makes this a pretty cool story. All the same energy and vibes of the Escape movies, just remixed for Mars now.

The best thing about the movie though? The soundtrack. It really rocks out when the action scenes hit.

I think I never really gave this film the chance it deserves, but I also needed to grow into it and accept it on its own terms. Carpenter made this campy on purpose, and it's pretty rad that way.
