The lenticular is on the inner slip housing the amaray case.

It's spice melange.

The moving sand is inside a real glass panel filled with liquid, most likely a thick one like mineral oil or glycerin (which makes the sand drift slowly and smoothly when tilted). This panel sits in front of the poster artwork.

The lenticular part is a separate hardcase that holds the discs and features a 3D shifting image.

So, the package includes both real moving sand and lenticular art, but in different parts.

The Via Vision blu-ray release was excellent. It had identical encodes to Plaion's theatrical and extended cuts, which are the best releases available on blu-ray (yes, beating Arrow's theatrical blu-ray). And the longest cut of the documentary, and the commentary by the author of that recent book covering the film. And much better quality deleted scenes than Arrow's overzealous filtering job.

Of course there was no 4K disc, but for blu-ray, it was a fantastic package. Only thing missing was the fanedit, but that's not an official version, and it is available for free online anyway.

So this update by Imprint adding the 4K theatrical elevates it to near definitive, though it's probably going to reuse Plaion's encode (like they did for the blu-rays), so not as good as Arrow's 4K (but not bad either).

Personally, since I have the Arrow + Plaion + Via Vision already, I don't have a need to buy this one too... (Or do I...!)

I'm not big on fancy packaging, but that sandbox thing is pretty cool. Including the comic book is a nice touch, too.

I think the only thing that would make this more complete would be including the better 5.1 track that's out there (the one without the distortion in the right surround channel). I think it was on the French ESC release, but not sure where else.

Would be including a steelbook, and remove the posters I don't know anyone who uses those folded-up ones.

Hilarious that all these months later you're still agonizing over this.

It's almost as if...you have to actually play the disc to check it.

Not how I'd put it, friendo. And don't worry, I got banned from the entire forum for a week for things people do here on the daily without reproach.

Just a friendly reminder to check your disc. No one else can do it for you!

Imagine charging $130 and not even bothering to include the Spicediver cut. The Plaion 6 disc set had way more content and was €90 (dropped to as low as €70)

I believe the Spicediver cut included in the Plaion set is a newer version that's not online. It also has way better compression.

I don't have the Arrow so I might actually have to get this.

Best imo to just keep it official - the theatrical and the legendary TV cut. I don't know if including fanedits is something I need in an official set.

The Plaion 6-disc is long sold out now I'm assuming?
Neither are approved by Lynch, so I don't feel like the TV cut is more "legitimate" in that sense. Would you say the same thing about Waterworld, where you would take the TV version over the Ulysses cut, which is also a fan edit?

Fair, I'm not going to argue which cut is more official or better, but it wouldn't have hurt anybody if they included it, and at this price point I feel like they should've at the very least tried to match the content of the Plaion set.

I still haven't bought this Dune on 4K yet, but I'd rather just get the French steelbook at this point, since it also comes with the TV cut and most of these extras at a fraction of the cost.

The French release's audio track is the one that says "siscrit report" (instead of "secret report"), so it has its own flaw! Though if that's the only issue with the audio, I guess it's preferable than the constant distortion. Though the stereo track on all these Arrow/Plaion/Via Vision releases is fine, so I have been using that.

Did Plaion alter the color or brightness in any way compared to Arrow's release?

Sounds like Plaion's/Imprints blu-rays were top-notch.
I don't know if they will use Plaion's UHD encode, that's just a guess, but they will for sure use Plaion's blu-ray encodes, because they already used them for the same company's (Via Vision) blu-ray release, which this package is basically an update to by including a UHD.

As for the image quality difference between Arrow and Plaion Dune UHDs, it's just the usual Fidelity in Motion (Arrow) vs near anyone else difference, FiM nearly every time will come on top, though that doesn't mean the others are bad. There are no obvious color or brightness differences.

(Though, again, Plaion's Dune blu-ray actually looks better than Arrow/FiM's Dune blu-ray. Once FiM jumped on 4K, they are not necessarily paying as much attention to their blu-rays anymore. Remember how their Pitch Black blu-ray was also easily bested by Turbine's: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...195474&i=5&l=0 as an example).

No, it's the same v2 he put online. And the compression is less than 1% better on the disc, practically identical. You have probably only seen his v1 online.

He has no reason to make it "exclusive" to Plaion, he is not getting paid for it, nor did he make it for them. He just agreed to their proposition to include it, because what better accomplishment!

Where exactly is it posted online, the uncompressed version? I know it's on youtube but even there it's restricted in some countries and of course you get that glorious YT compression.

Is the IMPRINT Box Set Exclusive to their site?

I'm not seeing any wording of it being a site exclusive unless I missed it on their page.

I just realized the price of the set... I think I will pass on this one... it looks cool, but not for $200.00 ish - Just for that cool case.

It looks like fanedit.info is temporarily? permanently? down, but it was there. edit: Just use the Wayback Machine, it works.

The 1080p version of the SpiceDiver edit on the Plaion release is 10gbs larger than the one they released online.

40gbs vs 30gbs.
