Mine shipped and with a bit of luck I’ll have it in time for weekend to compare them. This is one of Kino’s better encodes solely because so much of the film plays at night but I love replacing their releases too much.

Can’t speak on the encode, but I can almost guarantee the 101 release will have incorrect gamma compared to the Kino. I’ve compared many of their releases (granted none of their 4K’s) but literally every single disc I’ve compared has raised blacks. I think it’s just how they do it over there (which is why I’ve stopped buying them).

So have I been completely sleeping on Abel Ferrara all these years?
I watched Driller Killer years ago for a laugh with housemates (based solely off the title) and wrote him off as a slasher guy who went on to make some wannabe Scorsese-esque urban crime/gangster dramas, neither of which tend to be my thing. Bad Lieutenant was one of those films I kind of thought I'd maybe half-seen a long time ago too and thought little of, but on a whim I gave it another (or perhaps a first) chance with this release and it's kind of great. I understand his filmography is considered pretty hit and miss quality wise, but is Bad Lieutenant in any way a one-off? What's the next closest comparable film of his stylistically? Sidenote on the 101 disc: I'm glad I didn't let the menu cycle through before hitting play as it spoils a particularly powerful moment near the end of the film. I hate when menus do that. |

Thanks for the recommendations. I was aware of all of these (minus The Funeral) but as I alluded to above I've historically found it easy to dismiss them. I look at something like King of New York and on the surface I just don't care to go out of my way to watch it. Gritty urban crime set in New York, how original! Like I said, it's just not a genre that interests me all that much. Now I've had a taste of Ferrara's style though, I'm definitely more open to it. I guess I'll start there...
The critics and audience scores on his Rotten Tomatoes page are fascinating. Funnily enough, the films of his that have actually peaked my interest over the years end up being the ones that get critically slammed. 4:44 or Mary for instance. Are his 'bad' films really so 'bad'? |

Walken is brilliant, the supporting cast is brilliant, and as is thankfully nearly always the case with Arrow now, I can’t imagine the thing ever looking any better than it does on their 4K. |

Very interesting to hear your take. That you're also fairly indifferent to mob films but found King of New York enthralling is reassuring.
I did the Scorsese canon and The Godfather during the early filmbro phase of my life as you're 'meant to' see them (and every normie dude I knew at Uni's favourite film invariably seemed to be one of them), but they never did anything for me. Even adjacent stuff like Heat or whatever was just okay to me. As a result there are a lot of 'classics' which I've not seen. Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, Serpico, Once Upon a Time in America. I've grown out of pretending that I've seen Scarface too! I'm going to skip The Addiction though. If there's one sub-genre that appeals to me even less than crime dramas it's vampires! |

No, I don't think any of his later works are bad. He uses good actors – particularly Willem Dafoe – which is one of the things that keeps them interesting. |
