Sure, if you want Dolby Digital and DTS and the very basic stuff. You can get away with that when DVD was the pinnacle of HT but not now.

I don't believe anyone in here said that they needed a $1000+ interface which supports THX, THX Ultra, THX Ultra 2. This solution is completely doable and practical.

Remember that when the Audigy 2 NX was released, DVD's peak was about to - or might have already - peak. Consumer electronics company were looking at markets that have yet been untapped to sell DD/DTS.

When you look at the situation right now, they are not there yet. Dolby TrueHD and DTS HDMA are still new audio formats so CEs are not going go low just yet. Why? Because they know the markets are not yet saturated with these formats.

In fact, it would surprise me if Sony has not already done this in the lab but doesn't see a market value at this point.

I would be surprised if an adept programmer has not already created drivers for Ubuntu.

Just because PS3s can use Ubuntu as a second bootup OS, doesn't mean SCE has allowed you to use the BD drive or the Cell to do the decoding via Lynux. And so far, they haven't.

BD - DTS HDMA/Dolby TrueHD bitstream -> 7.1 Analog converter -> Analog signal -> Receiver's Analog-to-Digital chip -> Digital Amplification/Digital Sound Processing -> Digital-to-Analog conversion -> Speakers

To this:
BD - DTS HDMA/Dolby TrueHD bitstream -> HDMI -> Receiver -> Digital Amplification/Digital Sound Processing -> Digital-to-Analog conversion-> Speakers

Which workflow creates more opportunity for additional noise?

I am curious if anyone has gotten the Audigy 2 NX or the Extigy to work with Ubuntu on the PS3.
