good lookin blu, had some potential, but i don't see myself watching this again.
I think the "book" was a graphic novel, aka a comic book.

As someone else already mentioned, I found their take on Vampires refreshing. I liked how they seemed more like savage beasts than some refined being with a taste for blood. Because of this, it also meant the humans had to be more brutal when fighting them. No holding up a cross to keep them away or throwing holy water on them to harm them or stabbing them with a stake and having them turn to dust or wearing garlic to keep them at bay or not inviting them in the house to keep you safe. The humans had to be almost as savage when fighting them.

Anyway, I thought the movie was great and a very refreshing take on vampires. Definitely a must buy IMO, especially if you like horror/vampire flicks.

Well if we used all the "rules" laid out for vampires in every movie, they would get real boring. For instance...

1. Vampires are obsessive compulsives, if you want to stop a vampire from chasing you, throw a handful of rice on the ground, they would be forced to stop and count every grain of rice.

2. There are several ways to kill a vampire besides the traditional stake through the heart, decapitation (used in 30 Days of Night), running water(ex. a flowing river), direct exposure to sunlight(unless your reading an Anne Rice novel, if the vampire is old enough, they can go out in the sunlight and it will just give them a tan so they can move about without the pale skin.)

3. Vampires can only enter your house if they are invited(which can be overturned by revoking your invitation once you figure out your houseguest likes to drink blood, wear capes, and wear poet shirts.)

4. Vampires hate crucifixes or any other religious symbol(that depends on the main religion of the area. Case in point 1974's "The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires" by Hammer studios, it was set in Japan and since the religion there is Buddhism, images of Buddha were used as Vampire repelant.)

5. Vampires hate Garlic(Garlic was used to ward of evil spirits in Europe and surrounding countries.)

6. By killing the head Vampire, his/her minions will cease to be Vampires.(That only works if the minion has not made their full transfomation into a Vampire. Through multiple Vampire bites over a period of time or drinking the blood of their first victim, it usually takes a while before you become a full fledged creature of the night. Ex. see "Horror of Dracula" and "The Lost Boys".)

These are just some of the rules of being a Vampire, so if we stuck to them for every movie we would be looking at the same movie over and over again.

And no I'm not a Vampire or Vampire Hunter, I'm just a geek who loves Vampire movies...or am I?

To be honest, I really like it when directors take a ''myth'' and give it their own little twist. Gives these sorts of movies some diversity. I also feel it can make a movie more scary.
For example, when your convinced a vampire can't go near garlic, but he does anyways, throwing this myth right out the window. It's something unexpected, and sometimes that's what it takes to creep someone out.

Yeah, same here, I like when they try to breath life into a tired genre. Near Dark & Cronos were a couple of neat ones.

Here is a list of vampire films:

Picking this one up tonight, I couldn't care less about them not sticking to a specific myth set. Keeps them interesting.

I don't think this was the best vampire movie ever made. I think Dracula-Dead and Loving It is the best vampire movie ever made.

I've seen dozens of vampire flicks, from the Universal classics to bizarro Bollywood concoctions that would make your brain hemorrhage, and the one thing they all have in common is the fact that they all have next to nothing in common. There's tride and true vampire folklore stuff that permeates all of the traditionalist films, and then there are flicks like NEAR DARK, BLADE, VAMPIRES, etc, that either expound upon old themes or discard them altogether. Personally, I love it when a film abandons the established mythos and goes for something altogether new and exciting, like the indie flicks HABIT and THE ADDICTION, as well as George Romero's MARTIN.

Just watched it last night. Its got a fair bit of gore to it which I liked. As previously stated, there were a few "holes" in the story that didnt quite add up or inconsistencies if you will.

I also didnt like how these vampires fed.. The whole im having a seizure on your neck throat bites just didnt thrill me. I also didnt find some of the snowier scenes to be realistic looking (the snow fall clearly looked digital)

As far as the movie goes, Im glad Josh Hartnett went back to the horror genre (H20 and The Faculty ). Id love to see them do 30 Days of Night: Eben and Stella. I think those 2 chars were pretty well cast.

All in all, it was a decent Horror/Gore film, no glaringly bad actors, with Great PG and AQ. Was a blind buy cause I didnt make it to the theater to see it. After seeing it, Id still buy it.

I just finished watching it.

It was a different, refreshing spin on vampire stories.

I would recommend it to horror fans.

That was one of the few movies I ever walked out on at the theater.

I thought it was customary in all vampire movies to show at least one boob.

I saw none. thus, disappointed.

NEAR DARK was a fantastic vampire film... that really threw "the rules of a vampire" right out the window. 30 days of night was alright... I liked the concept though I thought more could've been done with it. And why didn't the vampires just light the town on fire to begin with? this would've forced everyone out of their homes from the start instead of within the last 5 minutes? oh well it is just a movie.

1 - A task such as this for a Vampire is like you and eye blinking our eyes. The Vampire can do it almost instantaneously.

2 - Never heard of the river/running water thing???

3 - Never heard of this either and I love Lost Boys. Must not have paid attention to this part or forgot it.

I actually enjoyed the fact that the vampires weren't wearing fluffy shirts, had little dialogue (Marlow), didn't look like Fabio, and pretty much didn't turn the whole town.

Look for 1965's "Dracula: Prince of Darkness".

PLMK (Please Let Me Know)

THANKS
I think thats why they call them "Myths". From my personal experiences with vampires, they can come and go as they please. Enter any domian without permission from it's owner.

Some legends have distorted the myths surrounding the head vampire's role in a clan. Some beleive if he/she is destroyed, the rest of the clan will die as well. Again, from my experience this is also just a fable that Hollywood has instilled in various movies.

As far as 30 Days of Night goes, thats pretty much the way it is. A no holds bar, search and destroy mission on innocents for blood. I loved this movie by the way. The SQ and PQ was amazing. One Very Creepy and Well made Horror flick. Worth every penny and good for multiple viewings! A positive.
