The only reason I can see in wanting a combo is to get 480i. That's easy, just use the composite, and you will get that standard def signal you are after without even having to go to set the resolution. Why do some worry so much about carrying the baggage of old tec on the backside of the new? The PS3 plays my DVD collection, that's more then enough.

Frankly, who cares? Combo discs are a bad idea (ref: the reliability problems of HD DVD's combo discs), from a reliability point of view. The whole point of Blu-ray is to eventually succeed DVD; putting a DVD-compatible layer in a Bllu-ray ain't gonna help with that.
