Saving Private Ryan is my all time favorite war film, We Were Soldiers would be a close second and third would be Band of Brothers.

I'll add Lawrence of Arabia because of the splendid locations and cinematography, great direction of action scenes, too.

Das Boot

and I'll have to say United 93, depicting a modern type of warfare, albeit a very unfortunate form of warfare.

If you all want a good laugh rent the movie American Soldiers, which is supposed to be a film depicting a typical day in Iraq. My Soldiers and I had a blast ripping this film apart when we watched it during my last tour in Iraq.

I really honestly can't wait to see a film that is of the same caliber as Saving Private Ryan that accurately depicts what urban fighting with insurgents in Iraq is really like. A lot of my SOF (Special Operation Forces) buddies have some incredible tales from Afghanistan that would make a great mini-series akin to Band of Brothers. There are some truly great stories waiting to be told about the current conflict. Forget about Home of the Brave, Over There (TV series) and all that other crap that's currently out.

Truthfully, I totally forgot about that one. I've got it on standard DVD and VHS and I'm debating on whether or not to triple-dip for Blu.

Oh, and supposedly MTV Films has a movie coming out called Stop Loss, which I'm sure will have an overt anti-war message.

A few that weren't mentioned that I really like for one reason or another and in no particular order:

Von Ryan's Express
The Great Raid
Empire of the Sun
The Caine Mutiny

Any movie on a submarine...

The are war movies I really appreciate but "favorite" is a stretch like Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now, etc.

Band of Brothers (though technically not a movie, it is the single most cherished piece in my DVD/Blu-ray collection of 2000+)
Memphis Belle
Paths of Glory
Schindler's List (does this count?)
Casablanca (another "does this count?" entry)
Full Metal Jacket
The Great Dictator
Platoon
Crimson Tide (well, they almost caused a war)

I love Memphis Belle. I'd add Tuskegee Airmen to the list as well.

Schindler's List should count. I listed the Pianist as a good war film, although it addressed a different aspect of WWII.

Though not often mentioned in the same breath as Das Boot, Crimson Tide, The Hunt for Red October, etc. I rather enjoyed U-571.

The Great Raid is another title I own on Blu and it's a good meticulous depiction of that particular engagement. Those who appreciate a good war flick with attention to detail on the planning process, this title is golden.

I haven't seen Empire of the Sun in a number of years, but I remember it being a movie I enjoyed.

Someone mentioned starting a thread on what are some of the worst war films. I'd consider adding these titles to that list:

Windtalkers (WTF?)
The Thin Red Line (this could've truly been a great film, but I think they blew it)
The Big Red One (I own this on standard DVD only because I was once served in that division - 1st Infantry Division - and Luke Skywalker is in it)
Courage Under Fire (it's only good if you don't understand modern tank warfare. Too many inaccuracies in the battle scene)
Alexander (great cinematography, but I wish they had focused more on Alexander the Great conquering rather than beat us over the head about his bi-sexuality)
American Soldiers (just plain crap)

I'm sure there are more, but those are the few that immediately come to mind. Jarhead and Three Kings were decent, but not great.

EDIT: I liked Flags of our Fathers as well, but just thought Letters from Iwo Jima was better overall.

All things considered, BHD does a good job of depicting urban fighting mostly. But since it deals with a battle that took place in Somlia in 1993, I don't consider it a war movie about current conflicts in the GWOT, which I was mainly referring to.

I will say that having been involved in heavy streetfighting and wounded in action (took a bullet) in Iraq myself that it only takes one guy with a machine gun to pin you down. There were a lot of bullets flying in that film, and at the rate it was depicted, a lot more of those guys should've died. Also, RPGs DO NOT FLY THAT SLOW. You will never, and I mean NEVER, have time to turn around and yell "RPG" to your buddy and duck out of the way while that thing is in mid-flight. Trust me on that.

The thing about Somalia was that the guys they were fighting were almost totally untrained. Plus when you're getting shot at, it sure SEEMS LIKE there are 1,000,000 rounds coming your way if there are 10.

The RPG thing was bogus, the rocket takes them up to about 300 meters per second, on par with a pistol bullet. Just some dramatic license like the big names on the helmets so the audience could ID the ranger characters better.
