You can use the remote for most things and you can even start the firmware update with the remote. But, eventually the firmware update process wants the PS button on the controller to be pressed and while the remote has that button, it doesn't work. For some reason, it has to be the controller at that point. Maybe that can be changed though. Originally we had to have the controller connected to the PS3 with the USB cable and that's no longer necessary.
