yeah the 2 Dolph movies that stick out in my mind are Universal Solider and Rocky IV. Of course, he did do a punisher movie, didn't see that one. Haven't seen his recent movies, like Diamond Dogs..

i liked the old punisher movie with him and louis gossett jr in it. This was the first punisher movie i saw as kid, i remembered seeing trailer on tv and i asked my mom to go watch it. I liked old punisher than the new one imo.

Agree with what's been stated already

Will smith is already there. Stathom is pretty close. The Rock has the ability to make it too.

I think all of them are trying to make sure they don't get typecast as strictly an action star though (maybe not stathom as much).

Christian Bale is another that could be one, especially after the Terminator movie(s), but I think he'll make sure he doesn't become just an action star.

Apart form Will Smith I would say Bale is a far better actor than those who have been put forward.

I loved Mickey Rourke from Sin City ("Marv"). He'd be a great Terminator or action hero.

In response to typecasting, I think action stars will have a tough time breaking out into other roles. It can be done, god knows Vin Diesel did try with the Pacifier, no I haven't seen it but I can't really take him seriously as a comedian. Now, in Pitch Black, that was awesome. I remember the sitting in the theater just blown away. Got the same feeling when I saw Terminator, when Arnold was the bad guy, he had presence on the screen.

Bale is a multi-dimensional actor, no doubt about that. He's made some exceptional films, but I don't really hold him with Swartz and company. His alpha role is Batman and he nailed it. In that role, he has presence for sure.

Hmm...

I like this question. However i disagree with a ton of yall about Will Smith. Don't get me wrong, I love will smith, and is one of few actors that i freely give my 10 dollars to at the theater. However when i think movies with Sly, and Arnold, Will does not come in the picture. Those guys were pure action dudes that my mother or wife would never even consider watching. Will Smith is more along the lines of Tom Cruise Action movies, like Minority report & Mission Impossible. Movies that try to keep the cheese factor low.

I agree about Guys like the Rock & Statham.

I think I'm leaning more towards the Rock, there is some untapped potential yet to be mined. He has screen presence and the look of a pure action star. Hopefully he'll get more movies in the vein of adult action movies, not necessarily movies like gridiron game (haven't seen it, but read a stat that his opening weekend beat the clooney football movie opening weekend).

If you're looking at it from a pure action star standpoint, then Jason Statham is the archetype of the action movie star of the 00's. He is today what Arnold, Dolph and Stallone were in the 80's ... all action all the time.

There is no denying that Will Smith and Rock are both incedible in action movies, but Jason Statham is really the one stand out who's career is marked by the shoot em up action genre. Will Smith and Rock are really more diverse than just being action stars. Arnold never got beyond being an action star. His few attmepts to break away and try comedy were very luke warm.

Other than Statham, there is really no one else out there dedicating their career to one particular genre. That aside I think that some of the other great current action stars are Clive Owen and Mark Wahlberg. It is a shame that Vin Diesel made some really stupid career choices (passsing up XXX sequal and making the Riddick sequal) and veered off the path of pure action star. I really had my hopes on Vin becoming the next Arnold, but it never materialized. Hopefully the new Fast and Furious will energize his action career.

I think Hollywood is slowly making Shia LaBeouf into the next action star. He did Transformers, Indiana Jones and he's got another movie coming out called Eagle Eye that I believe is an action/thriller. It could be just him trying to really jump start his career though, we'll see.

Wow, I was just about to make a similar post, but you've stolen the words right out of my mouth. I 100% agree with everything you've said.

Needs to gain some muscle, the kid - but I've never heard of them grooming 18 year olds to become the next action stars. Besides - he's not really an 'Action' star - he's not himself kicking anyone's ass in Transformers, and I doubt in Indy too...

Shia would need to hit the gym, granted he is young yet... Could be the same actor in the Will Smith vein, with a bit more development...again too soon to tell.

Well said. Statham was great in the Transporter, Snatch and 2 smoking barrels, need to see some of his newer movies. So maybe the big muscular action star of the 80s/90s is not taking off this decade.

Don't know much about Clive Owen, haven't seen his new movie Shoot em up, but I do like Wahlberg, thought 4 brothers was good, liked shooter.
