16 gauge is the standard used in HT installs, or larger.

think of it as a water hose. the bigger the hose, the more water you can 'push' through it (may it be a weak flow or not, you have ENOUGH to work with)

in the end its also a matter of perception, as earlier mentioned here.

I just upgraded my wire to 12 gauge CL2 from monoprice.
