We have better copy protection.

Blu-ray have another protection which is unique and only for Blu-ray media.
Its different from AACS and is format specific.

Even if this happens to Blu-Ray, it has secondary protocols to combat against these attacks. HD-DVD does not. Now, what is stopping some guy in china who presses DVDs to convert one of his lines to HD-DVD, then use these files to press fake HD-DVD's to sell for pennys on the dollar on the streets of new york city? Let me tell you, NOTHING. Blu-Ray does not have these issues. And thats why studios will just DROP hd-dvd rather then trying to salvage whats already been done to the format. Heck, i think universal realised they are a pawn being used by MS just to sabotage Blu-Ray, this just helps push them into the proper format and gives them the right excuse to do it.

I know of two people who have had success in ripping HD DVD discs and one who can get new keys.

Currently leaked keys are King Kong, Serenity (obviously) and 12 Monkeys. The guy I know has Superman Returns also.

This is for real. BTW, the crappy software player that allows all this to happen (currently) is WinDVD and it only supports HD DVD so for now BD is safe.

Also, while BD can have additional protection it is not clear if it is being used and if so by which studios.

So some BD titles may be susceptable to similar 'hacks'.

In any case, this is certainly a proven real compromise of the HD DVDs and conceptually all discs released to date are in danger.

Sony just release a firmware to enable BD-ROM protection on its BD player

I vaguely remember reading something about how the BD encryption is different than the HD-DVD encryption.... something about it being partially hardware based if I remember correctly

I think it is only a matter of time until all HD DVD titles are compromised, the speed at which the hackers are working is phenomenal. Apollo 13 is the latest one to fall. I think they will have 1-2 weeks before the player keys are revoked and all new discs are authored to carry out this task.

And the number of HD DVD keys is up to 20 now.
Can someone send the list of keys to Universal?

At this point, i dont think it will be shocking to see nearly every film on hd-dvd, including the Studio Canal imported stuff (which i am shocked to see so many of reported already), to have the keys put on the website by monday morning for all the world, and of course Universal, to see.

They have not got long before the player keys are revoked, so it is not surprising to see them working so fast. Once the WinDVD keys are revoked it will be a while until someone else figures out a new way of doing this.

Surprising, but not too surprising.

This is great news for VC1 HD on Demand!

I uhm had a friend who just tried it. Using PowerDVD 7.2 Ultra HD-DVD Edition. Superman Returns was used and works PERFECT. So 100% confirmation here folks, this is the real deal.
