I still am of the opinion that Theater is the standard by which HD is judged. We have a really nice Carmike in town that uses DLP projectors. I don't know if they are 2k or 4k, but they look really snazzy! I watch Blu's on my Toshiba 42RV530U and while 1080p looks great it doesn't quite hold up to the theater experience. Loving the theater is why I wanted an HDTV and a Blu-ray player to start with. It's also important to note that Studios are still quite interested in theater returns concerning their view of whether or not a movie is successful - even though disc sales make a boatload of money. I would encourage all of us to continue supporting theater sales to support our favorite movies.

at the nice theater in Memphis all of the screens are digital now. several are thx certified. i saw iron man the other day in screen 16 (my favorite) and was still disappointed. no it wasn't the little kids, it wasn't the cell phones. it was the rattling at the top of the screen anytime anything exploded on the screen. it was very distracting. it's never been that way before but it definitely makes me want to just buy a 1080p projector and forget that place ever existed.

That is a problem that you won't ever have at home! +1 for home theater.

I still love going to the theater to see movies I love my BD I will not become such a snob that I wont go see a good movie. Unless you have a 60' screen in your house it is not the same no matter how hard you try you cant duplicate it.'

The source is still 24fps. Whatever framerate you crank it to will make little difference

Speed racer looked good and I enjoyed it, felt it got a bad rap.

Anyways, I understand that box office take still counts a lot, but they need to realize that I spent some dough on my HT equipment, and I'm buying most new releases on BD that I would have seen at the movie. Instead of getting my $20 ticket price(wife and I) they are getting the $25 I spend on the BR. Its fair in my eyes.

Basically, any movie that I would have went to the movie to see, I buy blind on BR.

Default Screen Archives

Just an FYI for those considering a purchase from Screen Archives--don't expect quality customer service. I ordered Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines on the 10th, it took until the 12th for them to ship it and it just arrived. 8 days from order to arrival. In 2012. Silly me, for $4.95 for shipping I expected Priority Mail but it was sent via USPS First Class mail-and in just a jiffy bag not a small box. For something that only 3000 are being made, shouldn't it warrant sending in a box? To top it off, I live near Tampa and the PO sent it to Pensacola. Where it sat for almost 2 days while they had it marked as 'missent' -I didn't even know that was a real word. Obviously the lengthy trip through the Post Office menagerie is no fault of Screen Archives but when I email them and get comments like 'be patient' (after 5 days) it doesn't give that warm and fuzzy feeling for future orders. This is the kind of customer service companies were giving in the 1980's that angered millions around the country.

For me the theater better just the size of the screen and the sound.

I do find it hard to beat sitting at home watching a good Blu-ray in 1080p on my 59" telly with my 5.1 speaker set-up.
The problem I have with cinema's here at home is they are just not up to the same quality as those as in say L.A. or London but what can I expect?
This is a small country after all.

Thumbs up

Kind of odd to bump a 4 year old thread about movie theater PQ with a complaint about Screen Archives shipping time and packaging...

Anyway, I saw The Avengers when visiting relatives a couple months ago and I hadn't been in that theater since the mid 90s (it was a Regal Cinemas theater). Sadly the only thing that has changed since then was that the theater had degenerated due to wear and tear. There were seats pulled out of the middle of the theater to make room for 2 wheelchairs (they didn't really bother patching the floor up properly). The stationary seats were the same as the 90s, now just old and worn and very tiny compared to most theaters - the back of the seat didn't even reach my neck. No cup holders of course. The screen was very small as well, and the PQ looked like I was watching a DVD blown up. I think it was digital projection via a standard definition projector (or possibly a 35mm print via an unfocused projector). The audio was OK.

All in all, pretty disappointing for $10 - and nowhere near the quality of a Blu-ray.

It's not really necessary to ship one blu-ray or a DVD in a box. A bubble mailer is sufficient. SAE Customer Service representative: Ed has a notorious reputation of being extremely rude, and impatient to customers, who call and inquire about their orders.

I'm surprised you had a bad experience with Screen Archives because their service to me has been stellar. In the past I've ordered several Blu rays in one order and they came in a well-padded and well-prepared box and arrived very quickly.

(One time, I forgot to include a discount coupon and an offer for a free DVD in my order that I sent them. After I e-mailed them, they responded the same day and said they would take care of the discount and free DVD. And they did.)

I also ordered a single item ("Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines') and it also arrived in a bubbled envelope, and there was no damage. And it arrived very quickly.

Sorry that things were not as positive for you.

Blu-rays on any tv bigger than 50 inches look very weird to me. Lots of blocky backgrounds. Oddly, DLP doesn't exhibit this problem in 5x the viewing area.

Overall, I still prefer the theater.

Nothing can even come close to touching the movie theatre experience. Yes there is something to be said about watching a movie at home on your flat panel and home theatre in your underwear, stopping for bathroom breaks or snacks. But it still lacks the movie theatre experience. I guarantee you do not laugh as hard by yourself as you would in a group experience. You're never as thrilled or awed by the visuals. The massive scare on the big screen isn't quite as scary at home. That's because they are all shared experiences. I don't want to give up. I don't see a movie over and over like I did when I was a kid and saw the Empire Strikes Back 16 times, but I am positive it was more fun to hear Darth Vader say No I am your Father, and hear the gasps and then the pin drop, something you cannot get at home. And while Jaws will be out in 26 days watching it at home will never be quite the same as seeing it on the big screen when Chief Brody sees the shark for the first time.

I don't necessarily agree with that.
I think it depends on how much $$ you're willing to dump in a HT. The distance you sit from the screen in a movie theatre can be compared to the screen size and how far you are sitting from it in your own HT. I don't to TV so I can't speak to that but in my HT the furthest you sit from the screen is 19 feet. The screen is 11 feet wide and 5 feet high so at 14-16 feet back from my screen it looks about the same as sitting half way back in a large theatre with a 40 foot screen. My picture is just as bright, the sound system is identical to a commercial movie theatre and the popcorn is better! I would almost be willing to bet I've got less $$ in equipment to project 1080P as well as 35mm film as most people have invested in hi-tech home theatre systems.
I haven't been to a commercial theatre in amost 2 years.....and I'm a retired movie theatre owner/operator. Too much hassel, too much talking, texting and crappy popcorn. Besides....I can stop my movie anytime I want to!! The large movie theatre experience has run it's course with me.
