Ok...while you are feeling so generous...here is another question.

I am going to go ahead and get the 605...priced at Abt for 377. The Blu-ray player is 378, FYI...back ordered till mid-June.

How will all this hook up? If this is too big of a question I understand.

DVD player to the receiver or the TV? What type of cables will I need? The tv has

2 HDMI inputs.
DVI in (hdmi 2)
Digital audio out
ex-link
component in

side inputs include an hdmi in
wiselink

sorry, we cross posted.

right now, I don't have anything except an HDTV.

Next week, Dish is installing their HD cable box.

I can;t imagine my old marantz receiver will be of use.

When I get the Blu-ray dvd player, I am just going to run it straight into the TV for now.

Later, I will get the 605.

My husband cannot understand why I need the new reciever. "The sound is just fine", he says. As you can see, I care more about this than him!

I guess what I really need is advice on how to get started with HD...then let it evolve over time.

what Bluray player did you get?

...ok if it were me...

Id connect the DishHD with HDMI directly to the TV and run an optical cable to the receiver for audio.

This will allow you to connect the Bluray Player to the Receiver via HDMI and still have an extra HDMI slot open for another device on the Receiver...the Receiver then connects to the TV with an HDMI cable.

also, connecting the DishHD directly to the TV will allow you to Calibrate so it would not be "sharing" the same settings through the Receiver with the BD player.

I don't think my current receiver has an optical in.

The DVD player on back order is the Samsung 1500.

When I sneak in the Onkyo 605 I'll hook it up as you recommend.

I don't think less thna 800 bucks is a lot of money for both a BD player and HD reciever!

So....I'll be in the dog house for just a little while...but I use the chocolate chip cookies with him too! hahahhahaha Oh, and sometimes the

Just kidding!

not sure if you're aware or if it matters to you but the Sammy 1500 is only 5.1 via HDMI...

That's ok since I don't plan on upgrading my speaker system. Seems like I just bought these Atlantic Technology speakers...5.1 and it sounds pretty good to me. The spousal unit would really come undone if I was trading those in already!

I too have DishHD, and absolutely love HD channels...I find myself not even bothering to look at regular channels anymore.

Does your Husband like mixed martial arts??

also, in my area I cannot get local HD channels (fox, abc, cbs, nbc) so I connect an external antenna to the Dish box, and now I can get local HD. Did you sign up for 'local' channels?

Yes, we have local channels and i think they are included in the package. Not quite sure, i guess. I better check it out. Good grief this is SO involved!

Ny husband is a big whitewater enthusiast and environmentalist type guy...so we like a lot of nature programming.

He is teasing me because I DO watch Oprah and he keeps saying things like 'Why do we need to see Oprah's pores any more clear"?

I love film--independents, Hollywood, documentaries, hell, I even watch the Power Point presentations out of UC Berkeley! hhahah

I'll check on the local thing, thanks for the tip.

Ok, my locals are not denoted as HD.

SO...another thing! I will get the little 10 dollar antenna and hook it up on top of my DISH HD Box? And that will make the locals come in as HD? That's crazy!

he will absoltely love Discovery HD and HD Theater.

They have one of the best picture qualities available.

* to see what local channels are available in your area click here.

If you do not see "HD" next to it, you likely wont get them...in which case you would need the extra antenna for local HD.

EDIT: guess you already found out!

yes.

But depending on the area around you...hills, trees, buildings etc

the signal might be a little sketchy...but its cheap way to get local HD channels.

also, the $10 antenna is $10 for a reason, I have one and it works ok, but if the signal is crappy a better antenna might be needed.

ahh...yes, we live in the forest....LOTS of trees.

But I will try it.

This may be a dumb question, but does the antenna literally have to sit on top of the Dish box?

You are really earning your cookies now.

I edited my initial post of htis thread to read the following:

EDIT: If you are clicking on this thread for the first time, it evolved into a very informative thread geared towards the absolute greenest of newbies in the HD world.

I wish I could change the title to indicate this. Something like, HDTV for green dummies or something like that.

end of edit.

no, the antenna comes with a wire about 6ft long you can put it elsewhere...or even connect an extension wire to make it even longer....i sit mine behind the TV...not the best of spots...but really my only spot to put it.

Yes, that is exactly where I am going to put mine. I was wondering what I was going to do with all that extra space since I moved out that 200 pound tube monster!

Unfortunately, when we built the house, I only allowed enough space in the built-in entertainment center to allow for my 37 inch...nothing bigger.

Now, after I get through all this drama of the initial HDTV set up, I will begin with my big screen projector set up in the basement.

I will wear some folks out on that project for sure.

It's interesting though, you guys have such a passion for this stuff. And I really appreciate it! I will pay it forward with knowledge I happen to possess somewhere down the rode, I promise.

I'll be back on here Wednesday after the Dish people leave. I guess I better buy a couple HDMI cables.

oh...and HDMI cables.

3ft HDMI

6ft HDMI

10ft HDMI

you would need one for each device, and one from the Receiver to the TV.

...pick up an extra cable just in case you need more.

You know what would be really helpful if it doesnt already exist on here...a terminology thread. for example, DVI, ex-link, wiselink, etc.

You have really helped a girl in the Ozarks out today.

You can go to bed feeling really good tonight.
