Haven't seen this version yet, but I have seen the original (Hong Kong) version. It was absolutely horrifying. I think that one and Ju-on (the Grudge) were two of the most scariest movies that I have ever seen. Somehow, the Grudge (American version) was not as scary. May be there was something lost in translation. I don't plan on buy this one; may rent it just to see how it compares with the original.

I do not endorse downloading films, this said, I have done so when i have bought the original but it has not been released/delivered yet. I did buy this used from Amazon, it was as bad in BLu as the bootleg. Too dark in places, just bad.

Most US (Hollywood) remakes of Asian movies are total and utter failures (prime example: Shall we dance, which totally misses the point and atmosphere of the original) However, the few remakes that are decent, are those where Hollywood was wise enough to get the original director. In doing so, they preserve the original intent and atmosphere of the original movie. In that way, the Grudge is one of the best Hollywood horrors I've ever seen and is very close to the original Juon. Perhaps I think the Grudge is a good movie because I don't like the typical US gore horrors or teen-scream horrors ... instead, I prefer subtle and suggestive asian horror movies. Juon was great at that and I think that was carried over well from Juon. I haven't watched The Eye yet, but if it is in the same vein as The Grudge, I just might get it. |

I respect other people opinions very much, I loved the "Ring" and when I saw it was a remake of a Japanese film, I had to get the original, from that point I was hooked on J horror. The Grudge 1 and 2, Dark Water, the Eye (The first one), Tomie (all of them) and all the Memento Morai (spelling)? Haunted School Korean films, The Host was good too. But with the exception of "The Ring" the US remakes always missed the point, Dark Water was truly shocking and when I screened it for some collage kids in California in 03, they had to look away at the end, so did I and I had seen it. The remake seemed to be made without seeing the original, what was the point? Has anyone else seen the original DW?
