Yeah, you're right! Only a slight improvement...

BTW, can you guess how much I spent on my first DVD player?
$100.00?
$200.00?
$400.00?
$500.00?
$586.95?

Take a wild guess!
You're overrating the resolution. I've been to best buy and seen perfect 1080p hdtvs playing blu-ray movies. They are sharper, but it is not worth paying that much more for such a slight improvement. That slight improvement may be good for video quality freaks, but it's just not cost effective. The disc size is considerable bigger (bd-r 25gb) but you could still store more than 25gb of data for about $1.25 (using standard dvds). However, it would cost AT LEAST $10 to use a bd-r disc to store the data (in most cases, about $20). Talk about a difference between cost-effectiveness. I don't care about how much you paid for your overpriced dvd drive. If you want to waste money on overpriced hardware, then go ahead. But don't tell the rest of us that blu-ray hardware is cost effective and not overpriced.

I was an early adopter of the dvd burner, Got the 1x speed for like 4or 500.00, cant remember, But within a year I had to buy a new burner as I was having disc write failures due to the fact that the discs were meant to burn at faster speeds.Anyways that was a lesson learned there.
I dont see any cost advantage yet to pirating blu-rays. The blanks are almost as much as the movies

My expensive ass DVD player was bought YEARS ago. 1996? 1997? ... a while ago.

2 - 3 years ago, a dual layer(8.5GB?) DVD-R was $10.00
Still as high as $4.00 per disc(depending on brand and source)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1134697746522
Today, a 25GB BD-R can be bought for $9.99 or less.
Spanning 25GB across 6-7 SL DVD-Rs is just asking for a set of new coasters.

One hiccup on one DVD-R and the whole set is fried(Think split Acronis backup images)

Yes! DVD-Rs are pennies a pop - NOW!
What were they 10 years ago?
Do some research and get back to me.

Okay...why are you here? Nobody cares about you crying because you think that this new tenchology is too expensive. You keep posting in all these threads here about how bad Blu-ray is. It seems as if the only reason why you are here is to troll or argue. Go troll somewhere else

No, the reason why I originally started this thread was to get a feel for how prices will change in the next year or two. I already have a basic idea of how long it will take for prices to come down. I never said that blu-ray was bad, I just said it was not cost effective since the companies that produce blu-ray discs and equipment charge a lot more than they have to. I'm not here to troll around. I'm just here to ask legitimate questions. I already got the info that I needed (which is that it will be more affordable in the following year). Most of us already agreed that blu-ray is less cost-effective than a normal dvd, so that's the end of the thread. There is nothing more to be said in this thread.

I'll pick the last. But, for the record, my first TWO DVD players each cost $999.99 (the second also played LaserDiscs, however). Either way you got off way too cheap for an early adopter and owe me at least $414.

Do you go around to websites for caviar brands demanding a reduction in price to match that of tuna? Blu-ray is better than DVD (6x resolution, lossless audio, etc)... if you don't want the increase in quality fine... but then why post here? Go eat your tuna and leave the caviar to those who can afford it and appreciate it. (BTW, unlike caviar, Blu-ray will reach your pricepoint eventually... so you can at least be grateful for that).

Wow.

That's so unbelievably untrue.

If you're going to insult people, at least be accurate.

Even now, they ain't the prices people in Best Buy pay. Do you shop there for your Blu-rays? Didn't think so.

Just like most people here still say that blank BDs are $20... please re-read my post - specifically the part where I typed - "depending on brand and source".

It is true that DL DVDs were $10 not all that long ago, and they ARE ~$4.00(or more!) per item still today... depending on brand and source.
http://www.staples.com/office/suppli...P2096:CL142807

As a matter of fact, I *DO* buy my Blu-ray Discs at Best Buy.
I'm not really good at waiting... even for a few dollars cheaper - that is if I even owned a credit card.
As you wait for your new discs to be delivered, I watch mine within 20 minutes of purchase.

Anything else I can help you with today sir?

It'll load all Blu-ray movies...but if they are Java disks...like all Disney ones that I have...it'll only load to the main menu of the disk. I can't play them I'm using WinDVD BD.

I can't remember off hand which ones I've tried. I know the last movie I tried was Behind Enemy Lines. Ummm... I don't think that Full Metal Jacket worked. Hmmm. I am Legend DID work, and so did The Patriot. None of the Pirates worked I think.

Don't have any of those... animations maybe?
Chicken Little, Cars, Meet the Robinsons, Pixar Short Films...

Although, the "Director's Q&A"(CL) doesn't want to display, the disc loads and plays fine.

PowerDVD will display anything on the discs.

EDIT: Hey! Is it that you cannot click on the Play Movie selection?
Use the arrow keys and Enter.
Several discs I have are like that(Surf's Up was my first no-clicky menu).

That definitely sounds like the problem to me as well. Unfortunately, many studios pay absolutely no attention to PC users in their menu designs, and don't properly designate a "clickable area" for buttons, rendering your mouse pretty much useless. Using the keyboard arrow keys, on the other hand, still works flawlessly.
