I'm all for choice - whilst I like to see the director's/cinematographer's original intent, I wouldn't be so churlish as to deny anyone the option of doing a little zooming and cropping to make the image fit the screen if you find the black bars so distracting that they spoil your enjoyment of the movie. It may interest you to know that here in the UK, Sky Movies and Film Four among others predominatntly broadcast movies in the Original Aspect Ratio. There seems to be little concession to any desire to fill the screen over here.

As far as anamorphic encoding for 2.35 & similar movies go, this sounds risky to me now that the players and format are launched - it might have been wonderful if they'd put it in to the spec from day one as we may have seen some delicious cinemascope-shaped LCD and plasma displays... I would worry, though that the de-interpolation required to take a 1080p 2.35:1 signal and make it a 1080p 16:9 letterbox might not be possible with a simple firmware update to legacy Blu-ray players -- that might be on the wish-list for the next format. lol

Is the reason there is no anamorphic due to 1:1 maping being better to display than scaling the image

There is nothing wrong with giving people the option to present their purchase/rental in the way they prefer.
Since when did wanting the movie "unchanged" make me a snob?

Why don't they just make displays that have a natural aspect ratio of 2.4:1 and then put black bars on the sides of the screen when watching 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 programming? It would eliminate the loss of vertical resolution. I know there are many home theatre installations that have projector screens with sliding frames, but for those who don't have the space or the extra moolah for a projector system (like myself), a HDTV that's already configured that way could be quite handy.

Now wait a moment.....I would never, ever, in a million years want to watch a movie outside of its OAR, but I am an owner of a very nice plasma TV and I do like to have the full screen filled from time to time to reduce screen burn in. I know that I can use a callibration disk, but having Lawrence of Arabia (when it come out) going as I do chores around the house is better than a four hour screen wash.

One of the best things about this format is that the movies tend to be in the OAR. As long as that would not change, I would like the option.

What if there is no zoom function on the TV that can scale a 1080p video source containing 2.35 or 2.40 video to fill the 1.78:1 screen?

This is why I as suggesting it be put in Blu-ray players as well (someone has said there is such an option in one player). I probably wouldn't use it most of the time, but I'd like the option to be there anyway.

This is not a new concept, as it was one of the standard means of offering a widescreen image on 16mm prints for those that did not wish to be bothered with an anamorphic lens.

Print of many titles were produced this way, inclusive of Rebel w/o a Cause. I also saw a 16mm dye transfer test of Lawrence cropped to 1.85, but am uncertain if prints were produced in the format.

You already have the option, either through your TV or through the player. There are various zoom features, read your manual and please see our many many other threads on similar topics
