Umm, for a given size, plasmas are usually about the same price as LCDs, or cheaper. The "plasmas are soo expensive" myth is way past its day.

really theres no reason to "steer clear" of plasmas anymore though, they don't get burn-in. also if you can check this TV out in person you will be blown away... and the scaler in it makes upscaled SD (from a blu-ray player) look pretty damn good... just an option to consider IMO

Yea i'm in the same boat as the OP.. was deciding between the sammy 40" LN40A530, the 46" LN46A530, and also the 40" and 46" in the 550 series LN40A550 and LN46A550 respectively. Now my understanding that the 550 series only difference is 30,000:1 contrast ratio as opposed to the 20,000:1 that the 530 series has. I don't know that I would be able to tell the difference of the two and that it would be the extra money to get that feature.

So I was decided on the 46" LN46A530 because I should get the biggest I can afford right now, and then I started reading about the Panasonic Viera plasmas. Now I am undecided whether I should be looking at those plasmas instead now, and my research tells me that the panasonics have a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, which would seem much better than the lcds can produce. I will mainly be playing ps3 and watching blus, thats all. So I'm now debating between the LN46A530 and the panny 42" TH-42PZ80U as thats about the limit to my budget. What do you all think? and sorry if I am one of hundreds that have previously asked this question!!

Go with the panny 42" TH-42PZ80U, deeper blacks and no motion blur

I got the LN40A530 a week ago. In the store i saw no difference in picture quality between the 530 and 550. The extra 10,000:1 contrast is dynamic not static, but everything looked indenticle in these sets. The 550 has that blue led light on the front and the frame is a bit less wide. I also played with the panasonic for a while but preferd the picture on the samsung lcd. I would say go with the 530. If you like 120hz get the 40" 650.

yea I went to the BB that I previously worked at and they let me hook up my ps3 and test out the sammy 46inch 530, 550 and the viera 50inch PZ80U. I watched a few movies on blu and played some games and my eyes couldn't see a difference at all. Probably due to all of that shitty ass fluorescent lighting and none of the settings were correct. So i saved myself 500 dollars and got the ln46a530 and couldnt be any happier once I got it home and set it up. Geek Squad is coming in a month to calibrate it at my house.

Stay away from Vizio!!! Waste of money imo. My 2nd HDTV was a 32" vizio and blacks arent deep and coudnt stand the motion blur.

spec wise, it is not worth it plus the 42" panny PZ80 is only like $200 more and you will def. see an increase on PQ from the vizio. I have an Olevia and Vizio, when i bought my panny as my 3rd HDTV I was amaze on how amazing the PQ, its like watching out the window.
