The upper end ones still have low distortion even at 6 ohms or lower.

Besides, chances are his speakers (like the great majority of consumer speakers) are 8 ohm.

Sony ES is very good, and so is Pioneer Elite. Unfortunately what they sell in stores like BB & CC is not those.

OK after everyone's comments on Sony and Onkyo, I sourced a few Onkyo606 receivers and have decided that the Australian distributor for sound equipment is making a mint and/or the gov import tax is.

Sooo going against the grain and getting a Yamaha RX-V663 - I can source one for about $944(Aus) where as the Onkyo 606 is @ $1,277(Aus), which is not even a contender for my budget.

So if the Yamaha RX-V663 gets the thumbs up I will buy it on the weekend, then look for speakers.

Just like to thank everyone for their opinions and comments

Not to shill for Onkyo...

Yamaha's are pretty good, but I find Onkyo's much more user friendly and a better bang for the buck, not to mention the sound quality is a bit better.

And so you should.... in the US, but here in Australia a 605 will retail between $900 - $1200 ( that is if you can find one) and a 606 retails for about $1200.

If you can link me a US dealer that will ship to Australia please, do share, because the currency conversion should be more like $402 AUS(plus post) for a $349 US receiver

B&H Photo Video is a reputable New York City dealer. They ship to other countries. They also sell dual voltage electronics. I don't know if you use 110 or 220 volts in Australia?

I have to disagree with many of the members on this forum. Sony makes excellent receivers. Their ES series receivers are rated among the best. Listen to the professional reviewers who have experience with the equipment they review.

Yes, ES receivers. The non-ES receivers are junk and he can get another brand that isn't for lower prices than the ES ones with more features.
