I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be much buzz on the forum about the new low cost LG BD burner. It's in CC's weekly ad that came out Sunday 7/13. The Link is HERE. It has industry leading 6X write speed for BD-R and is selling for $229.

People are caught up with the gaming news. Best Buy slashed $20 of its Insigna brand BD player, and Warner is cutting the MSR on Blu-ray movies for Q4. People gravitate towards the HOT topics.

Nice find. I'm shocked they got these out so quickly. The official release announcement was just a few weeks ago, and Circuit City already has them in an ad... that's pretty impressive. And, yeah... nice price.

Considering my girlfriend (and hopefully soon to be fiancé) is a film student and is currently filming in 1080i with her camera/school equipment, this sounds most intriguing... Nice find, sir! I'll probably snag one at the end of the week when my next credit card cycle begins (I just went to 7.1 surround and the price put a dent in the wallet...

I have a small HD camera and i edit my videos with Ulead MovieStudio 11 plus
and then i burn them to a format called AVCHD.
this AVCHD format is recorded in a Blu-ray format on a standard DVD
you get about 30mins on a 4.7 disk and one full hour on a DVD DL.
works great. and yes it plays in any Blu-ray player in HD at a cost of
10 cents per disk or 75 cents for a DVD DL

I agree that until the blank BD-R prices drop to under $5 each burning BD's will not become mainstream. My first DVD burner cost me $300 and the blank discs were several dollars each. As demand for blank discs gradually grows the prices will fall, but it's going to take some time. If we start getting standalone BD recorders with built-in ATSC and QAM tuners (hopefully some will also offer 2-way CableCard support) this will help grow the market more quickly.

I can venture my own reason why people may be a bit hesitant about the LG burner.

I bought the LG Multi-Blu Burner (forget the model number) a few days ago, and lickitey-split, four hours after I got it home, I had a $20 coaster sitting on my desktop! I/O error or something like that.

This ain't the first time that i've burned a plastic donut using a new optical drive, but this the MOST EXPENSIVE screw up. Most probablly, it was my fault - I was using a network computer to access the Blu-Ray-drived computer while it was burning the disk, so that was most probable cause of failure. Then again, I could have been using a drive that was to full to use as the buffer; in my haste to burn, I didn't check the temp files drive.

Anyhoo, $20 is a lot to pay for a mistake. When the media comes down, people might be a bit more likely to adopt a BR burner.

BTW, my system is a Q6600 proc, 3GB of RAM, and 1.2 TB storage, so the system dynamics should not be an issue for the problem.

The CC sale is now over and it is back to their regular (full) price of $279. This model should be showing up at on-line discount e'tailers soon.
