I did. Pass' xx.5 series is reputed to be a substantial improvement over the non .5 series (e.g. X350 vs. X350.5). I suspect that the X250.5 will actually sound better than the X350, despite fewer watts. For the record, I've only heard the X250.5, which was superb.

Not sure a couple of weekends ago I pulled it out of the closet and hooked it up to the 875. All was well for about for about twenty minutes and either it's malfunctioning, shutting down ,or something. Tried it twice and put it back away. I don't want to ruin anything. The amp has been boxed up for I would say the last 10 years. It is in mint condition so I'm clueless right now.

I will always keep this amp and will eventually send it in to see what's wrong.
I do know Sunfire of course will repair it but I have also heard of a mysterious lady who is a Carver pro so I have to look into it. She can be found through the Carver Fan Forum.

Anyhow it's a bummer

Some Carvers had a reputation for catching fire, back in the day. I'd let it be until it's been rejuvenated by the folks @ Sunfire.

Well thank you everyone for the suggestions I will look into everything.

Another company that caught my attention was Mcormack (most likely spelled wrong sorry!!!)

I guess a bit of the story is missing from the plot and mainly because this is a home theater site and most of what I want right now is for Two channel so.............

What I would like to do is get a hold of a Modwright 36.5 tube pre.

Other equipment I would like:
Dali Helicon 400s or 300s (pair)
Sub ?????????
Two channel amp???
five channel amp???
CD player???

Everything I will be getting will eventually be getting a wonderful home of it's own. (when I make the move) I can still enjoy it as I build up the system though!!!!!!!! Also take into account that it is a piece by piece operation as the right equipment comes up for sale. I really don't want to settle for something that does the job. I want to really enjoy it to the fullest in an affordable but highend manner. There are people out there who buy equipment and hardly use it so they sell it.

People if you read this you don't have to settle for "new" and "good" gear you really can find awesome highend equipment barely used for half the price. It is a wonderful opportunity.

I've not heard it, but the McCormack DNA500 is a well-regarded class A/B amp right in your price range, used. I have a friend who thought very highly of it when used with his Dali Helicon 400's, though he's since upgraded to a Spectron Musician III SE Mk 2.

Great to hear about the McCormack there is actually more choices out there than I had realized. Especially from manufacturers in Europe.

You know who the friend is and how I value his opinion. I suspect his upgrade to the Spectron is part and parcel of his speaker upgrade to the Revel Studio 2's. He auditioned several amps with the Dali's before he selected the McCormack, but he limited himself to new gear.

It is nice to be able to exclusively get brand new equipment especially highend gear. I look at it from this viewpoint. I am 32 years old and this is going to be my first highend setup so "used" but "mint" is fine. Helps me gather exerience without paying full price. Besides who wouldn't take a $50,000 setup for $25,000.

It may seem a little crazy I guess to some concerning cost but if you want highend sound there is only so many avenues.

Yes, yes I do know the room is as important as the gear but all in do time. Just wanted to say it before someone else did!

Seconded. I heard a demo of X600.5 driving B&W 800D's. Simply outstanding. I would love to demo the XA200.5's in my own system if I ever get the chance. The Ayre MX-R monoblocks are also on my short list.

Thought about recommending the 600.5's but out of his price range (out of mine too for that matter). I've never heard the 600's but if they sound as good as th 350 (and according to RUR the 250.5 sounds better than the 350) that amp must be pure delightful!!!

There's no right or wrong answer to this and folks live very happily with tube preamps combined with either tube or SS amp - it's all a matter of preference. As regards combining a 2ch tube amp for front L/R with SS for other channels, it's very common and I doubt you would find the tonal differences objectionable (or even particularly noticeable) when listening in HT mode.

Great to hear.... In any case though I really think it is a good idea to consider a pair of monoblocks or a 2 ch tube amp for my new tube pre. I do love some two channel music but don't want to sacrifice SQ in the home theater aspect.

I haven't committed to anything yet so a little daydreaming won't hurt. Hopefully I find a great amp or two in the near future.

BAT VK75 SE http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls....io-VK-75se-new
Terrific price and a very well-regarded tube amp.

Lots of other offerings.

I have been looking at BAT SS but The $$$.

I have been looking at AGON every few days. Funny thing is when someone has something I'm interested in and I make an offer or ask them to consider matching a price sometimes it goes unanswered. The funny part is if their is another exact same product but offered by a different seller after the "pending sale" notice goes up the 1st seller is quick to lower.......then it's too late.

It's kind of like divorce proceedings. Anyhow I think more people should think about AGON. You can definitely find mint condition quality gear waiting for a loving home.

People if you haven't looked on Audiogon or Videogon you are missing out. I have seen some barely used brand new highend receivers selling for almost half price. So if you don't think you can afford that Marantz, Integra, etc. think again.

Got to find a nice class A amp tube or SS but most likely will hold out for a Pass Labs X.5 series amp if I can remain patient.

Never hurts to look around though!

thanks for the offer but I will have to respectfully decline. I am like an old picky woman.

I am looking for a 100 lb. +/- class A beast.
