I disagree with you. It's entirely dependant on the master.

Or if this is true (which I highly doubt, or else he's hearing a 24-Bit TrueHD track and comparing it to a 16-Bit PCM track like on Sony titles), the decoder might be doing something to Dolby TrueHD that it's not doing to PCM. But that's a BIG if...

Which Blu Rays have both?

Typically I prefer DTSMA on Fox and PCM on Sony.

(But... if no Blu Ray's have both... how can you compare? What's the point?)

Compression will only lessen the quality if it is LOSSY. LOSSLESS compression does NOT result in a loss of quality.

First DTS-HD MA, PCM comes very very close second. Maybe is first PCM, DTS-HD MA comes very very close second. Difficult to say.

I have the LG BH200 and honestly I always felt my PCM tracks lacking in comparison to the TRUEHD and DTSMA tracks I was bitstreaming. It wasn't till I changed from "bitstream" to all "multichannel PCM" that I found out PCM's true capabilities and i'm quite impressed. It does have it's own sound signature.

Now if I wanted to go outside the mathmatical arguments, i'd say that DTSMA sounds more PCM-like than TRUEHD.

I really like DTS-MA for a legacy track inside the lossless track and a simple solution for a default audio track.

Though the NIN blu ray is nice, I'm sure it has more to do with Trent than
dolby truehd...and that's the only dolby truehd i'd say is real real good..

as for Dts it's quite good, but i still like pcm better..

Just reporting what I noticed.

I believe some are jumping aboard the PCM bandwagon.

yeah I prefer DTS tracks over anything else on a DVD. However, my Blu player can't bitstream DTS-HDMA. So until I figure out which one to buy I'm just going to be jealous of the others that can experience it.

I just think that DTS on dvd was so much clearer as it has a stronger signal the regular DD.

There was however one Blu that had awesome DDTHD and that was batman begins. Don't get me wrong there were some lovely parts to Transformers - not just Megan Fox - but i feel that with a movie like that there should have been a higher bitrate to the audio than 4 - 5.

Golden compass and saw 4 easily hit 8+ wth dts hd ma that must be as uncompressed as you could possibly get!

This thread is hilarious to me. Since all soundtracks begin as PCM before being encoded to both Dts ma lossless and Dolby TrueHD, how can the encoded copy be better than the master? Secondly, I doubt anyone here can hear the difference between 16bit and 24bit in a DBT because most folks do not know what to listen for in the first place. Your house is not the place for any comparison because most are acoustically challenged, and bluray discs are not the right type of signals to test any theory of sonic qualities between the codecs and PCM.

It is smart to just sit back and enjoy the great sound that you get from bluray movies. Personal anecdotal information cannot be verified, nobody has done a DBT that is scientifically sound as of yet, and nobody here has the equipment nor the listening education to hear any difference between lossless sources.

For a non-PCM lossless track, 4-5 mbps is pretty high. Uncompressed PCM (someone correct me if I'm wrong) @ 24 bit will typically be at a constant 6.9 mbps, while 16 bit is at 4.6. The bitrate doesn't need to be high on TrueHD/DTS-HDMA due to the lossless compression. Otherwise, you're defeating the purpose of the codecs, which is saving space. If this is your criteria for judging quality, you're already defeating your own argument, because Batman Begins barely sees bitrates over 3 mbps, and when it does it's for a VERY brief period.

Precisely. If anything, the only debate as to what is closer to how a film should sound is between TrueHD and DTS-HDMA, since they use different compression techniques (I don't have enough technical knowledge to intelligently speak to what is different), but they should ultimately equal the PCM master.
