I think it has more to do with their marketing department telling him "are you ****** nuts, you just killed the sales of the X360 version....how can we sell the game to X360 owners when you said it's not only going to be the worst version but is actually reponsible for downgrading the entire game for everyone".

I was told by a lot of 3rd party game reps (which are basically PR/Marketing people) that the most important thing in today's world of gaming (when releasing a multiplat game) is to make sure both version are EQUAL and no version is superior. The moment any fanboy gets a hint of extra jaggies or worse framerate (ala Madden 08) it can literally kill the sales on that platform. So for the developers to come out and bash their own X360 version so hard, I'd have to think the marketing people are pulling their hair out right now.

The main reason for limiting the game's content is the Xbox 360's limited disc storage, which allows about six to eight GB of data.

According to Willits, the game was supposed to feature several wastelands for the player to explore. Because of the limitations of the Xbox 360's media, they had to cut down the wastelands to only two, which are themselves split into multiple instances. These changes have been made across all versions of Rage, not just the 360 port.

Unfortunately, that means the experience has been altered across all platforms. This is one of the first signs we've received of the 360's older DVD media showing its age, but we expect some fans won't be terribly pleased that it's affecting other versions of the game as well
and then later said to clarify 1up's blatant lies

Quote:
During my talk today I mentioned that we originally wanted to have around 5 or 6 smaller wasteland environments but later decided instead to have 2 larger wastelands. Mostly because we were going to be shipping on two DVDs for the 360 and felt that it would play better with one large wasteland on each disc so there would be no loading between wastelands. Not loading levels while you drive around is a much better decision regardless of platform.

There was NO CONTENT removed from RAGE because of the 360--NONE AT ALL. Moving from multiple wastelands into fewer but larger wastelands was a far better decision and is actually giving us more gameplay in the game.

We feel the 360 is a great platform and will provide a fantastic Rage experience.

Funny, I find that:

"The PC is limitless in the amount of data you can put on it," said Willits. "The PS3 has about 25GB. But the Xbox 360 roughly has 6 to 8 GB of data. We're hoping we can squeeze the game down to two discs for the 360 version."

"I wouldn't say the overall story was changed in any way in order to fit on the Xbox 360 version," Willits said, "but how the player experiences Rage's story has been altered."

Translates directly into:

"According to Willits, the game was supposed to feature several wastelands for the player to explore. Because of the limitations of the Xbox 360's media, they had to cut down the wastelands to only two, which are themselves split into multiple instances. These changes have been made across all versions of Rage, not just the 360 port."

Not sure what kind of BS filter you're using my friend, but mine is working just fine.

They changed the entire game to fit the 360's limited resources.

Let me translate it again for you just in case your BS filter is broken. He says this: "I wouldn't say the overall story was changed in any way in order to fit on the Xbox 360 version," Willits said, "but how the player experiences Rage's story has been altered."

Which to anyone who's paying attention reads as: "since the 360 is still using DVD tech, we need to crowbar the info down as far as we could to even fit it on 2 disks, with the other system {Ps3} we didn't have this problem, on the computer it could use as many DVD's as we wanted as most of the info is downloaded onto the hard drive anyway, however we changed the game itself {but not the story} based on this 360 limitation"

Hey man, if you have the horsepower, use it.

Unless you like buying a sports car and only driving around in 1st gear all the time because you use the same gas as everyone else.

Oh I'm totally with you now man.

But I would have loved a huge free roaming environment {or 6} but instead we get 2 because they feel the need to cater to the lowest common denominator.

The 360 uses DVD's so it should have 8.5GB of data right ?
The PS3 can read double layer Bluray discs so it should have 50GB of data right ?

8.5 gigs I can only assume {as I don't know for sure} that he might mean AFTER all the stuff like physics engines and such are packed in there, they have only that much space.

Not sure if he's implying that his company is to cheap to buy dual layer Blu-rays or not. *LOL*

You don't get it. Rage was supposed to be a flowing story with 5 or 6 chapters each moving the story line and gameplay style onwards in a different direction with each new chapter.

Now we have 2 chapters, granted they are two big chapters, but the game is completely different from the one Carmack described to us when he announced it.

The problem for id is now that the general consensus is that all of them are gimped, sales are going to go down for all versions. I know I'm not going to buy Rage now. I was going to get the PC version off Steam, but now, knowing they have gimped it, well, I just don't want it anymore.

Judging by the forums and responses you can bet there are a ton of PC and PS3 gamers who no longer want this game, especially since there are a bunch of other games coming out during the same period. We know MS have a policy that no console games that release simultaneously across PS360 should look better or play better on PS3, so this is just an extension of that. What I don't understand is the need to piss off PC gamers, I couldn't care less if the game shipped on 10 DVDs or if I have to download 40-50GB off Steam. Makes no sense to do that, especially since us PC gamers have been keeping id in business for so bloody long, great way to repay us...

6.9GB once copy protection and other miscellaneous data are accounted for.

BD50s are pretty rare for games, I wouldn't expect many games to use BD50 outside of RPGs.

Do us all a favor and stop posting or think before you post anything. It think you just like to go against PS3 for your own amusement and the "thrill" of arguing on the freaking internet even when you make stupid comments and convinced you are right.
I'm royally pissed at this ID's statement, no matter how you cut it, 360 limitations limit all other versions, I'm really pissed that the PC version will suffer the most. Instead this huge world gamers will only get a fraction of it. It's partially ID's fault too, because they insist on releasing this game simultaneously on all platforms. If you're really planning to get this on PC I don't understand why are you alright with this. I guess being stupid has its limitations like xbox's.

+100

I still plan on getting this on the PC, with the mod world, the game will have several options that just aren't available on a console.

Oh no I should stop posting because you want me to.... yeah that might happen.

Besides, my statement was accurate. Developers want to make for the widest amount of people and systems possible, without spending more money. Thus, they will always make for the weakest of the systems and port from there. Happened last gen, happens now. You dont like it, well thats too bad i guess, but its the truth.

You got a link to prove that bolded statement? Id like to read it, ive never heard of that policy before, well, except for what people say in the forum, but ive never seen an official link saying that.

I'll refer you to the comments of 2K games who have been quoted verbatim saying for the PS3 version of Bioshock:

"Our goal was to make a version exactly similar in the technical department to the 360 version".
Now, why wouldn't they strive to make it the "best they can possibly do" version, a year after the 360 version, if not for fear of "annoying" Microsoft?

There seems to be a significative amount of hints that devs are going to add a little bit of DLC, a little bit of content maybe, on top of the 360 version, but will do their darnest to proclaim that both versions are technically stricly equal, even to say that's what they're aiming at, which sound pathetic to me instead of saying : "We'll do the best game we possibly can on each platform".
