I don't know about adapters because those speakers are meant for the little receiver. But you could probably sell it pretty quick on ebay or such.

Now since you said you want seperates, heres what Im thinking. Anything along the Onkyo 606 and up (including the 705, just the new models have a 6 instead of a 5 at the end) will be an excellent choice for a entry - middle level receiver. Now as far as speakers go, Since my learning experiences, I always recommend to people to find a brand of speaker they love (For me its Klipsch and Paradigm) and start there. Start listening to the speakers you like and you'll get a better feel for things. Sure people can tell you this speaker package is great and this one is awesome but it all comes down to your preference. My advice to you would probably try not to fit all your speakers into your budget at one time, not only will you be settling for lesser sounding speakers, but you will also want to upgrade in the very very near future.

Heres what I would do IMHO.

Buy an Onkyo receiver
Buy the best tower speakers (or bookshelfs if you dont have the room)
Buy the best Center Channel
Buy the best sub
Buy the best surrounds

All of which are in your original budget that is and at certain stages. For example if the tower speakers you like cost $700 only buy them and then spend the rest on a sub or center channel. Build your theater in steps rather than trying to settle for everything in one budget. If your budget only allows you to get a receiver, 2 speakers, and a sub then so be it. You'll be far better off in the long run if you buy the speakers you actually want than settling. I can almost promise you that if you spend (just an example folks) $700 on a pair of front speakers they will most likely sound better than any $700 5.1 set of speakers you can buy. I hope this info is helpful to you

I see a lot of people buy speakers seperate, i.e. fronts, rears etc, why not just buy a speaker system that includes front, centre, rear, sub ? all in one ?

I think a lot of us, if not most, who buy seperate speakers do so to build a higher grade of system. It takes substantially more money to do so, and in my case, I didn't have all of those funds to spend in one fell swoop. So I started with the Fronts, then added the Centre and then the Surrounds. Have yet to buy a sub, as I haven't decided what to get. So far my speakers have cost me $3,500 and took me 2 years to put together.

I am very happy with my decision to go that route as opposed to buying a complete set-up and I would recommend that more people do the same.

So what your saying is, buying seperate speakers at a hell of a lot more expense is worth it, i am currently looking for a speaker system, but will start off with just an all in one package

And your system will run rings around a lot of stuff here. Those totems of yours are excellent speakers and resolve a lot of detail. Your approach was excellent - what type of budget do you have for a subwoofer?

Get rid of your existing system - you will thank yourself for it If you are upgrading - one of the best upgrades you can make are your speakers! You have received some good recommendations here. All would be improvements over your current rig.

It doesn't have to be a "hell of a lot" more expensive, no! But it definately can be, if you want to go that route. I would consider my speaker set-up to be slightly above average, but no where near some of the other set-ups I've read about. Also, my system doubles as a 2-Channel Audio rig as well. I play a lot of vinyl (way more than I watch movies), so it was important to me to invest a little more in speakers. I decided what brand/model I wanted for the Fronts and then matched the Centre and Surrounds to it.

For the record, BD's are still amazing to watch and listen to with only 2 front speakers.

I don't really have a budget, but since I'm not a bass fanatic anyway, I'll probably buy something around the $500 range. The matching Totem sub is somewhere around $1,200 (last time checked) and I'm not willing to go that high.

I should add that the Totems already deliver a very solid bottom end, which is also why I haven't rushed to get a sub.

Note to prerich

I had a pair of Klipsch Heresy II Signature Editions in a Glossy Black finish. They sounded amazing with my old McIntosh integrated amp. Fell on some hard times about 15 years ago and had to unload them. A real shame because that combo gave me a lot of enjoyment.

Good to hear that you liked them, I have the Heresy original (same tweeter and midrange as the Klipshorn) I'm running 3 of them as L,C,and R, I'm enjoying these speakers very much!!!!. Oh and yes your Staff's go pretty low for a tower with a small woofer. I've always liked Totem's offerings - have you heard the Wind yet (the speaker not the actual wind ).

And that is just as valid of an option. Buying a cheaper complete speaker package will allow to enjoy full surround sound while saving for speaker upgrades, which for some of us can take some time. You can upgrade pieces of at a time without ever missing out on full surround sound.

Did you consider this Onkyo?
http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...ss=Systems&p=s
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...7ZQ/ref=nosim/
Could save you some coin for Blu-ray movies.
Just a thought.

Plainview: It's the truth. You're not my son. You never have been. You're an orphan. Did you ever hear that word? You operated here today like one. I should have seen this coming. I should have known that under this all, these past years you've been building your hate for me piece by piece. I don't even know who you are because you have none of me in you, you're someone else's. This anger, your maliciousness, backwards dealings with me. You're an orphan from a basket in the middle of the desert. And I took you for no other reason than I needed a sweet face to buy land. Did you get that? Now you know.
[Plainview whistles mockingly]
Plainview: Look at me. You're lower than a bastard. Mmm-hmm. You have none of me in you. You're just a bastard from a basket.
HW's Interpreter, George: I thank God I have none of you in me.
Plainview: [H.W. and George get up and begin to leave the room] You're not my son. You're just a little piece of competition. Bastard from a basket, bastard from a basket. You're a bastard from a basket!
