Yeah, that's nice, but still, on a title about music Paramount still decides to go with plain old lossy Dolby instead of lossless.

They suck.

I didn't want to pick this one up but I might have to given the reviews of this title. I'm just trying figure out why Paramount didn't include a lossless audio track? I can understand not wanting to pay TrueHD royalties this early in the game, but isn't the use of LPCM free? As in no royalties have to be paid? To me that is just being lazy. The space is there, the ability is there, so why don't we have lossless audio?

Watched Dreamgirls last night.

Proof was in the pudding, really great eye candy resolution.

I hear you. Do you think a little Warner Bros. has rubbed of on them?

Paramount appears to be pretty content with only supporting DD on DVD as well. Hope that isn't a sign of what we can indefinately expect from the studio from BD. Simply put, there is no excuse for not including lossless on any title. That should be priority number 2, just behind video quality. Dreamworks has always been proactive in their support of advanced audio when Universal was distributing for them. Hopefully, they'll voice more influence in the future. I'm sure Spielberg will want some of his films like SPR to include DTS MA.

I hope Dreamworks doesn't start (or should I say continue) shafting BDs on the audio side like Warner.
If that were the case, Paramount should have gone LPCM instead as PCM's an(correct me if I'm wrong here) "open" technology that anyone can use for free. That would instantly have made the BD version the superior one too

That's right. LPCM is licensing and patent free.

Probably the logic is that Paramount using is that don't want to be seen playing favorites. But, then failing to offer something that is easy and cheap on Blu-ray would seem to actually help HD DVD by keeping things even.

That's right! The only way to be even is to play to both format's strengths. Right now they are playing favorites with HD DVD by giving them the best PQ HD DVD can have while Blu-ray doesn't get max'ed out in any area (except in the patience dept.).

The HD-DVD version has Dolby Digital Plus at 1.5Mbps.

1.5mbs is a slight improvement over 640kbps at best. Hopefully now that more BD players are supporting TrueHD, maybe we'll at least see Paramount experiment with it too, assuming the lack of lossless support has been a result of a desire to not play favorites. Though, again, it may just not be a big enough priority for the studio based on their history with DVD.

On the topic of TrueHD. Stomp the Yard is Sony's first title to included lossless compressed. It also includes PCM for what should be an interesting comparison.

I have heard that the TrueHD has a higher resolution than the PCM track (20/48 as opposed to 16/48 maybe?). So it will definitely be a good comparison if this is true.

It should be an interesting comparison. But higher sampling rate doesn't exactly translate to higher resolution. I don't expect to hear a difference, myself. We'll see.

I agree, but Max suggested a higher bitdepth (24 as oppose to 16) and this is much easier noticed even by non-audiophile-people.
