as long as you have the settings calibrated and not on vivid, then you should not have an issue with burn-in or image retention. That being said it is still advisable to run it for 100-200 hours with a burn-in prevention disc/scheme.

currently plasmas are still prone to burn in, but it has gotten a lot better over the years with technology advances. a lot of plasma sets also have burn in protection now built in. you still need to "condition" a plasma for around 200 hours before you start using it mainstream and shouldn't leave a static image on it for a long period of time just to be cautious.

lcd's, while many say otherwise, are also prone to burn in but it happens a lot less.

exactly, the OP can find that chart thats posted all over this site that shows the min 1080p viewing distance. it floored me. all those people at BB throwing their money away, who are buying small 1080p's and sitting far away. i even have to sit within 15 feet of a 67"!!!

If you want an LCD and a Samsung, this model is on sale at Circuit City for $1199; Samsung LN40A550. Great TV and no break in period like with Plasma, but you would have to increase your budget some. But based on you budget and all, I think overall the previous solution would be ideal.
