thanks for the link but i cant find any info on pcm through hdmi?

also crackin, would you go for the pio or the yammy? based on sound quality & reliability?

AND is the VSX-1018TXV-K the same as the VSX-1018AH-K?

final questions:

-would i be able to hear pcm tracks with these receivers?
-the site im looking at doesnt state that the 1018 decodes DTS HD or Dolby TrueHD (im assuming it does, but just need some clarification)
- and lastly, quality wise (both sound quality and reliability) which of these receivers would YOU get?
Let me back up a bit and make things even more confusing for you.

Back in early 70's I purchased my very first 2-channel integrated amplifier. It was a Pioneer SA-9500II and I still have it! I can't part with it, despite the fact it is no longer in service anymore.

Both Pioneer and Yamaha, and for that matter Onkyo, Denon, etc as well, are well-respected brands and either choice would be a good one.

Not many websites state PCM capabilities...and when they do they can be wrong/confusing. Even user manuals are vague. But I assure you, if it can decode TrueHD and Dts-HD MA, it is equipped with an HDMI v1.3a chip...which all HDMI v1.1 and higher support multichannel PCM. Unless there is a chip that decodes lossless but does not support PCM, which ive never heard of.

Thats a tough call, im a Pioneer man myself so my opinion would be a little biased. The Yamaha would be just as good but I like the look of Pioneer.

sometimes certain stores get their own model numbers...like Costco's Sony BDP-S301.

thanks john, crackin and everyone else for your input and help.

i will definitely post back here and let you all know how it went

no not really...unless you are trying to get each component with THX certification or utilize some sort of control feature.

But for the average joe, it shouldnt matter what receiver,tv,speaker combo you have.

I agree, but should add.

It only makes a difference once you travel up the audiophile/videophile scale.

another problem

i keep looking at the "VSX-1018TXV-K" model of the pioneer and on none of the sites does it state it can decode the new audio codecs (true hd and dts hd ma)

i know on the picture of the receiver it shows it on the display, but the problem is i am buying it online to save 15% so i cant really clarify this in store...so should i just assume it can decode them?

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...gon=&langid=EN

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...st%5Fcookie=1#

both these links say nothing about dolby truehd and dts hdma
