If you have many movies, can be a ***** to keep track of which ones you already have

That's why I don't like to rely on online sites to keep track of my collection:
  • I don't have full control of the info I want in it
  • It's not in my own hands when the site gets shut down
Instead I prefer to use a software package specifically made for keeping track of DVD/BD collections (like Movie Collector), then from there export the data to HTML and upload to my own server (see my sig for an example)

Sure, it takes a bit more work, but at least I'm 100% in control of my collection.

I just track them on a spreadsheet, much easier and no risk

This is the problem with using free sites. Thank goodness I had been planning on this contingency and had made a backup of my collection at DVD Aficianado. I had used DVDprofiler before but the fiasco with the version change had put me off using that software.

I've been using both DVDSpot and DVD Aficionado simultaneously, and I also maintain my own spreadsheet, so my data is OK. Still, DVDSpot was always my favorite out of these options, and I'm sad to see it go.

I was loving DVDSpot. I only used it for my Blu Ray collection. I'll go check out DVDaf but maybe a spreadsheet is a good idea too.

-Brian

EDIT - The eport thingie on DVDSpot made a spreadsheet for me... cool.

What a bummer. Guess it's time to try something new.

Is there some way we can blame this on Toshiba, like in the good old days?

Dont forget you can export your list out into a file format. Not sure what format it saves the list as though.

Another thing it's good for is Gift giving. People always wonder what to get me, and with this they could look at my wish list and know what to get.

I know this is probably not want you want to keep data of your collection but I have a great program that keeps everything for me PLUS it uses a Cuecat that scans the barcodes and downloads all the film data into my computer.

Here is the website www.collectorz.com

That is a shame that this closed down, I enjoyed DVD Spot the most and DVDAf is not that great imo.

My thoughts exactly.

I still have my DVDaf account (only for my dvds, never put any blu-rays up), but I never much liked the layout. I found dvdspot, loved it, and just stopped using DVDaf.

I was wondering how long it would take before we had this topic. I seen it pop up as soon as the news broke, I was editing my movies.. This is such a shame but I am sure we will see a DVDSpot wannabe pop up soon after they close for good.

+2 I'm using the Collectorz software to keep track of my DVD's, Blu-rays, games and manga. You can make very nice exports to HTML and upload them to your personal server or a free webhost. Here's an example, taken from my own collection:
DVD
Blu-ray
Lots of free export templates available at the Collectorz site as well
