I no longer have link, it happened at the beginning of the Iraqi war. Now, I am not trying to persuade anyone for or against the war- that is the beside the point. But he met with Tariq Aziz in Baghdad in an attempt to prove that there are no Chemical Weapons in Iraq. Meeting with the enemy in this manner during war time is treason. I gaurantee if I or any other average Joe had pulled that, we would either be in the slammer or perhaps shot (as treason is punishable by death).

About Milk.... I love the documentary the Times of Harvey Milk and the story behind it.
Harvey Milk is an major inspiration to me. "I know that you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And You... And You... And You... Gotta give em hope. Thank You very much." -Harvey Milk Last edited by bhampton; 12-03-2008 at 08:42 PM. |

Well, he played a man who committed treason in The Falcon and the Smowman. Penn played the snowman, a drug dealer who helps a childhood friend of his that works for the government steal and sale US secrets to the Soviets. Really good movie if you can find it.
As for Penn playing Harvey Milk, I wonder if he'll go full gay in this or just low key gay like Tom Hanks in Philadelphia. |

Quote: "Since he was right he could have saved countless lives and billions of dollars. That was a great thing to do... but I don't want to talk about that."
Tell that to the families of thousands of his own people that he killed with chemical weapons. Ya, I do not want to talk about that either. |

I edited an above post to remove a point of view,... not because of Mike's comments which I'm not going to research but because I meant it when I said I didn't want to talk about it.
I'd rather not bring any personal politics here and I'm sure BluRay.com appreciates that. -Brian |

Anyway, it is correct that Penn committed treason against the United States at the start of the Iraq War. Regardless of his reasoning, or even if he was correct or incorrect, what he did was technically illegal and is, under the law in the United States, one of the few things worse than murder or rape. It is technically punishable by death, but it is very unusual, even for the worst cases. He also does silly things like take a rowboat into New Orleans to "help people" with a crew of cameramen and no food or water. He is also is "friends" with wildly anti-American Hugo Chavez and shares anti American propaganda with him on Venezuelan National TV (In Penn’s view, being a liberal means supporting a dictator, who has run his countrymen into poverty, in his anti-western ideology). In my opinion, he is almost as bad as Jane Fonda, and as many people know, Jane Fonda is at the top of the hate list for most Marines. If I met her, I would rip her throat out of her neck. Penn is getting very close to having that same kind of reputation. (FYI, Jane Fonda went on a trip to Vietnam, and as propaganda for the north sat in an anti-air turret, and then asked an American POW if he regretted murdering women and children. He shook her hand and tried to pass a note to her for his family, and she gave it to the prison commander. That guy did not live, but it is not entirely clear if it was Fonda who caused his execution. I will make a trip to piss on her grave when she is dead.) That is why I hate Penn. It is not political, it is personal. Last edited by ThePhantomOak; 12-04-2008 at 01:15 AM. |

In a new interview with Elle, Franco reveals that he was surprised by a revised version of the script sent to him a month after Van Sant asked him to be in the film. While the original script featured only one kissing scene, the new script contained a full-on love scene. When Franco asked Van Sant about it, the director replied, "Well, it was Sean's idea." http://perezhilton.com/2008-12-01-se...in-milk-script AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT! Going as soon as I get back to the states. Last edited by jamclaur; 12-04-2008 at 03:52 PM. |

That's what you're looking for. He wasn't a terrorist at the time really, it was more like visiting Hitler's press secretary between the invasion of Poland and the invasion of France. You're right though, you or I would go to jail if we did that the day before Barak Obama invaded, say, Rwanda. My biggest problem with politicized actors is that their skill at acting is completely negated by their opinions. When I see Sean Penn or Mel Gibson all I see is the man, not the character. I may still be able to like the movie, but that thought never leaves my mind. Thus I could never give either an Oscar based on performance, because it would always be partly based on whether or not I was punishing them, rewarding them, or overcompensating for their political opinions. Obviously the Academy has no problem with that though... Personally I got no interest in Milk, it's your standard Oscar-season Hollywood lecture movie most of the country has no interest in seeing. It'll get awards though, which is why most of the country won't be seeing the Oscars. Thus Hollywood's current economic predicament. Last edited by Astalder; 12-04-2008 at 10:37 PM. |

Just got back, and it was fantastic...I still prefer Slumdog over it but Milk will fall into the 2 spot...and Sean Penn deserves best actor of the year for this one, dude went all out.
PS - I have not heard so much crying in the theater since The Passion. |

This one won't come over here for a couple months. I'll probably see it when it does.
Some movies come at the same time here as in America and not others, I wonder who decides and why. |

saw this movie and thought it was good. but really prefer the documentary by far. it did a much better job of capturing everything. penn shouldn't get an oscar for this role. just because you gain a ton of weight, play a mentally handicap person, or do a gay love scene, doesn't make you oscar worthy.

But I still have to see Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler to see who I really think deserves the Oscar...apparently Rourke and Langella give performances that are on the same level. Last edited by Crim122; 12-15-2008 at 01:15 AM. |

I saw the movie tonight. He is not nominated because he is playing a gay person- to assume that is just childish. Controversy and public opinion will not alter the fact that Sean Penn had a stunning performance. This nature of this movie was a bit difficult to handle, I'll give you that. A handful of people got up and left the theater just after the first scene. I, myself, haven't exactly exposed myself to movies such as Brokeback Mountain, but this is the highest-notch acting you can expect from Sean Penn. One of the ways I like to judge oscar-worthiness in acting is to see how well the actor assumes their role as a whole. Not necessarily how powerful or different they are, but simply how believable. Sean Penn keeps this credibility through professional subtlety. It will be interesting to see the performances of the other nominees, but so far, Penn has my vote. I highly recommend this movie to those of you that can stomach down numerous gay love-scenes, no offense to others.
