Had a chance to mess around with this for a few hours today. I honestly wasn't blown away. It's oddly shaped, first of all, with the bottom curving outward as in all of the pictures. The swivel feels a little cheap, it kind of "slams" open and closed and feels very plastic-y. The other form factor point I have issue with is the fact that your right thumb has to stretch over the portion of the phone that has the keys on it, which makes it kind of awkward and hard to reach some buttons.
The operating system seems solid, and I didn't really experience much lag or slow down when using the phone. The 'net isn't as fast on Edge as the iPhone, and the browser (and the whole operating system) isn't as user friendly or as seamless as the iPhone. There's no keyboard that you can use with the touchscreen, so every entry has to be made by opening the keyboard and using the physical keypad, which doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but it gets pretty annoying. There's no pinching or double tapping for zooming, either, which I really missed when I was using it. Overall, I think with some time the Android platform will show some promise. For now, though, they need a phone that is physically less clunky and doesn't require the keypad for everything. For instance, the "one touch Google searches" actually require a touch, then sliding open the phone, typing in your search, and then closing it if you want to go back to "phone style." Again, it doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but it feels awkward. If the operating system were in something like the Touch which doesn't require you to hold the phone in landscape, it would be a lot better. Just my thoughts. |

you're pretty much spot on with your review BStecke. tho i've heard the keyboard flipping out was solid. guess thats personal preference there.
i think it was a good start to android, and probably a good start of a phone for htc to release on android. since there's no multi-touch and android is clearly not as polished, there's no reason to make an overly awesome phone. i expect android to catch up with osx next year when the new chipsets and phones are hitting the market |

I manage the phones for my company, and they won't even offer the phones for corporate accounts. Hopefully this is just like the first gen iPhone where they started out not offering for corporate accounts and lacking Exchange sync, where it is added down the road....

In your area and many people may agree but for me I have never had a problem with Tmobile and its services, ive been a customer of theirs for 6-7 years and will continue to be. This thread is about the G1 and the new android market thats is available with the phone. G1 wont be an iphone killer but for $179 it sure is worth it and very fun to use.

I agree Goodguy818, the iPhone needs competition badly! I do not believe the G1 will make a dent in the iPhone's popularity but its competition nonetheless.
HTC touch Diamond seems to be the best competitor and its an attractive phone but I've had limited experience with HTC and like Vista.. Microcrap doesn't seem to make a reliable mobile operating system. I believe the G1 will be good operating system wise but man that phone is ugly.. clunky looking.. |

Yeah, T-Mobile is crap in my area here as well. It's "the worst" of all the providers. |

I love my iPhone soooo much, but I agree-- when it can copy/paste, then that'll be the day. It is in desperate need of this function. Also, it bugs me soooo much that you can't see the times of individual text messages that were sent/received. I can get 4 text messages and check my phone after 3 hours and I'll be able to see a time for the first of the four messages, but the following three... were they sent right after, 10 minutes later, just 2 minutes ago... I dunno!? I hate that!
