i have a friend that had to put his over the fireplace b/c that was the thing to do. he's one of those types. i absolutely hated having to look up to watch tv. it's not comfortable at all.

Go with your gut. If you can do it SAFELY, then go with what you feel is best.

I'd try not to make anything too permanent for a little while.
If you can just rig it to last a week or so, do that and see if it works for you.

I'd hate to read that you screwed anchors into brick or stone (or whatever your fireplace is) and then didn't like it.

Before we bought our house we looked at some others, one which had a triangular alcove above the fireplace. Our realtor was using that as a selling point, but I told her that was ridiculous. First of all, it's too high, second of all you're limited to the size of the TV, third running cables. It was crazy. As soon as my wife and I saw that we told the realtor, "next house".
